Kleo, my 6 month old cat, died two days after surgery. The vet allowed her to go home only hours after the surgery. I feel she should have stayed a few days taking fluids. I'm heart-broken and still can't stop crying.  I do have 8 other cats to get me through this. The guilt of not having her spayed is eating away at me. She was only 6 months old. She was a stray that had been dumped in a parking lot. Being so young, around 3 I/2 months when I found her, it never occurred to me that this could happen. This is my first experience with this horrible condition. People, please spay your pets.

Wow, they sent her home the same day?  That is not right, I work for a vet and Pyo cases are always kept 1-2 days after the surgery on IV fluids depending on how they are and how they recover.  I am so very sorry for your loss, that is really young for this condition, probably the youngest I've ever heard in 20+ years working in the vet field.  I am so sorry for your loss.

I'm very sorry for your loss. :( You did the best you could and in no way is any of this your fault.

Thanks for your comments. I'm really upset now. I knew she should have been kept for a few days. I will contact my Vet tomorrow. I know nothing can be done, but this makes things worse. Maybe she would be alive today if she would have stayed for a few days. I wish I would have researched this a little more. I would have demanded that she was kept for a few days. My Vet knew money wasn't an issue.  He did have blood work done and besides having a bad white blood cell number, everything else was okay considering, but it seems just to be on the safe side she should have stayed. He treated this like a normal spaying.  (She was on fluids while she was in his office.)  I will cry a lot more tears.

I'm so very sorry you have to go through this, but it was completely unforeseen and a rare, terrible tragedy. You had no way of knowing this would happen. My heart goes out to you, for even though you only loved her for a few months she had a big place in your heart and her loss is leaving a huge hole.Bless you for taking her in and showing her what it meant to be loved. It was meant for her to know your love and you are now honoring her memory by being an advocate for spaying and letting others know of this horrible condition. I'll keep you in my prayers and cry for both of you. Please take care of yourself and know we care. RIP beautiful Kleo!

To make it even worse, my Vet first said little Kleo was pregnant. I took her home and started counting the days and knew this wasn't right. Three days later she was operated for the pyometra. Two days after that she died.  Those three wasted days may have made a difference also.

I am so sorry for your loss.
I have never heard of a case of Pyrometra in one so young, either. It is so very sad. Please know you did everything you could for her and try to not second guess your decisions. Her case sounds like a very unusual one that could not have been realistically anticipated. The important thing is that you rescued her and loved her and gave her a good life while she was with you. That is a very special thing. Kleo undoubtedly loved you and appreciated you just as much as you loved her. One day you will be reunited with her at the Rainbow Bridge and you will be crying tears of happiness.
Grieving for your dear Kleo is the most natural thing in the world. It is right and good, please don't listen to anyone who says it isn't. Some people just don't get it and we should pity them for not knowing unconditional love.
I agree with Di and Bob, you are doing a great honor to her memory by advocating for spaying and neutering. Others will hear Kleo's heartbreaking story and have their cats spayed.
You are both in my thoughts and prayers.

Thank you for your support. It's going to take me a while to get over this. It always does. Kleo was my first Tortoise-shell.  She was so sweet. She really didn't have an attitude like I've heard for these.

That's very very sad. I didn't know what pyometra was until I read this post. Now I know! And I reserve my comments for that vet. But I really hope you can forgive and think of the happy life you gave her.
