My old girl Cleo, who's about 19-20 yrs old, was noted by me on Thursday, to have her tail drooping.  I'm very cognizant of even the slightest changes to my cats (I have 6) so I know for a fact that I'd not seen her tail like this until mid-day on Thursday.   Some movement to the end of the tail.   Abl to walk just fine, back legs and feet nice and warm.  She doesn't seem to be in pain.  I managed to get her into the Vet later that afternoon, thankfully.   My concerns were possible: abscess, issues w/ anal glands maybe, spinal fracture/dislocation, saddle thrombus.

Vet checked her pulses, they were good.   Inspected her for an abscess and found no sign of one.  Her temperature was normal.   Anal glands good.  She did xray and same showed no fracture or dislocation.   She was happy to see that Cleo had some movement to the end of her tail.   She asked me if anyone had pulled her tail, definitely not (I live alone).    She suspected that maybe it was a case of Cleo jumping down from a bed (though I do have stools and such to allow her a more gradual climb  down) and somehow ended up landing on bum by mistake....and sorta sprained tails.  Said she expects tail to return to normal in about 2-3 weeks.

This just really puzzles me.   No issues with peeing or pooping as a result of this, thankfully.

Cleo has kidney disease and has for almost 3 years but she's done super well with me supplementing her diet daily with syringe feeding her Rx canned food with various supplements in it (Vit B complex ,Epakatin, Omega 3), I do this once a day and she eats well on her own otherwise....plus I give her SubQ fluids every 1-2 days.   Her BUN and Creat are actually better than 3 years ago.

I can't really find any info on 'sprained tail' in cats.   I guess I still don't understand what's causing this if it's not any of the above.

Vet did say she was a little tender to the area, I guess at base of tail...but didn't feel it was tender enough to give pain meds.  Cleo seems very happy and her usual self.

Anyone else experience this?   What did your Vet tell you it was?   How long did tail take to recover?

Thank you

I don't have any experience with this, but I'm thinking since she's had such a thorough exam by the Vet, including xrays, and seems happy  and pain free, I'd probably just let her be and let it heal on it's own.  Can she get it out of the way in the litter box?
