My cat Zoey had 6 kittens on March 10th and 5 of the kittens are feeding on their own all of the 5 weighing over 100g. I have one kitten (Monkey) who is noticeably smaller and can't find the moms nipple easily. Monkey only weighs 82g, she was 88g yesterday! My mom and I have been trying to feed her with a dropper and a bottle which is very hard to do and we've been helping her nurse from the mom but its very hard for her to find the nipple and stay attached even with help, if anyone has information on the amount of formula we should be giving the kitten and how often please let me know! Also, if there are any tips on how to bottle/syringe feed a kitten easier that would be great too! I'm so worried something will happen to her because she isn't able to eat on her own. Btw we've never had kittens before so were very new to this! What do you think the best option for us to do is?

In my opinion the best thing to do is to try your best but also understand that some kittens arent ment to make it.. At 3 days if I remember right they need to be fed every 2 hours. You'll have to make sure the kitten is either with mom afterwards or you'll also have to help the little one go potty afterwards too. Keeping her warm is also important as I've read it can affect digestion at young ages. I'm not sure bout what amount to feed her but I've heard diluting kmr helps some kittens as its very rich, so maybe adding a bit more water will help?

With the little guy loosing weight in a day he should be taken to the vet if you can't get him eating proper amounts here soon. At the young age the little ones at loosing weight is a real bad sign..

It's so sad because we can only do so much :( were gonna try everything but thank you for your opinion on it! If the kitten has lost weight tomorrow too we'll probably take it to the vet! Thanks for the help :)

Stephs advices are good, just to agree.  Re. the vet visit: many vets arent good at helping small kittens, so do phone before you do such a visit, so you get an idea if this vet IS knowleable in this field.

A dropper is easier for the kitten.  Diluting some makes the kmr flow easier too....  Keep it warm, if necessary actively warming up.   You know it shall be feeded  paws down, head up, like when it is nursing from mom?  Not too big portions, better more often?

If necessary, you can perk in some extra energy by smearing some glucose sugar on its gum.

Links about handraising kittens here on this forum, also www.kitten-rescue.com

Write more in one hour....

Continuing.   Glucose sugar - common brand name is Dextrose.   If you dont have it, honey may be used, or white caro syrup.   Even common sugar, but less effective and slower.

Phoning the vet- phone the vets nearby, all of them, till you are sure you find a vet who is experienced with care of small, weak kittens.

As said, many arent good at this.   If there is some apparent wrong with it, they will find it.  They can inject fluids so it wont be dehydrated - it is often a good help.  but otherwise they often dont have a clue.

So find one who is used. Perhaps cooperating with a rescue.  Or cooperating with active breeders.

Amounts you ask.  with such a little and weak there are no big amounts. perhaps 2 ml at a time... But quite often, at least every two hours.  Later on you increase as it gets stronger.

Not too much at once, so it doenst risk to get milk in wrong throat, or get a reflux and get it in wrong throat (=lungs).

Burp some afterwards.   You can carry it at your chest while burping, and otherwise too.

Please return with reports and questions, I shall try and follow you also during the day at work.

Good luck!    *vibes!*

Okay that's so helpful! Thank you so much! I'll let you guys know how much monkey weighs tonight and everything! Her stomach seems a lot fuller but it's a little hard now so I'll give it some time so it doesn't become more bloated! Thank you, this website is so helpful! I'll keep you posted :)

To let you guys know, I went and bought a syringe today and we've been feeding monkey every 2 hours a little bit more than 2.5ml and she seems to take it really well! I've already weighed her once today and already from last night she's gained 6g! Monkey was 82g around 10pm and now she's 90g at 5pm the next day! So far so good!

So it's been a couple days and monkey has gained almost 30g I'm pretty sure! She now weighs a little over 130g which is a huge improvement but all of the kittens are sneezing :( as of today they all seem to have colds and make noise when nursing that they haven't been making before. They all are sneezing periodically and I have no idea what could be causing it. I put a heating pad to try to keep them warm, maybe that's effecting them? It came on all of a sudden so if anyone has information on kitten colds or anything let me know please! Is it possible the mom could've brought something in from outside? Hopefully it goes away soon though :/ well see how it is tomorrow morning

Kitten cold? No good, usually they have immune protection from mom. Keep on with them having it warm! You may perhaps need to give them extra fluids?? Thinking aloud...
I suspect they are a little too young for L-lysine. Otherwise it could help. Make a search!

Im happy it goes well with Monkey! Beaming!

@Catwoman707, @Tulosai

Good luck!
