Hi all,

My cat will be a year old in few months. When she purrs, she gets this bubbly sound. It only happens when she lays a certain way and she seems to swallow her saliva more when it happens- it seems as if it might be harder for her to take a normal breath as well when she has these "bubbles". I'm fairly certain it's all coming from her throat, not her chest.

Any ideas?

I really think it's worth a vet check.  It could be something simple, but fluid in the lungs can cause a bubbly or gurgly sound, and that can be caused by a myriad of conditions. The fact that she's swallowing saliva more when it happens could be fluid, or even some compression at the throat that is uncomfortable when she's in a certain position.

Honestly, people can come up with ideas here, but we're just guessing. It's impossible to know without her being examined by a qualified vet, and if she were my girl, that's definitely what I'd be doing.

Did you ever find out what was causing it? I know your post was 6 years ago! Just curious as my cat is doing the same, only the bubbly sound and swallowing happen every time he purrs. The vet is unsure what's causing it. We're using an inhaler in case it's asthma and we're getting some antihistamines in case it's allergies as this coincides with the hot weather we're experiencing lately.

Just wondering ...

Did your cat's veterinarian perform a thorough work-up to check your cat's airways?

Actually check the airways for any potential obstructions/breathing issues?
