My heart just cries for that poor baby, bless you for caring enough to help. I get angry when I think of how many people most likely ignored his cries for help. RIP sweet little Buddy.

I have thought of the same thing so many times. I have just absolutely sobbed for him so many times, I can't even think about it. I only bring up his photo/memory when I think it just MIGHT help another cat avoid this.

I am just so grateful that you found each other and you were able to help end the pain. Stupidly difficult doing that but still better than him being in agony. You, catwoman, are a star. You may not feel like it, but I think you are.

Stop now, I'm getting tearry eyed about it and I have to leave home!

Thanks so much for saying though, it helps :)

My intentions were (or at least what I thought) was to have the one obviously ruined eye removed and to get the other eye healed, likely with scar tissue, and take him home, give him a loving safe life.

I was so shocked and deeply saddened when the vet said he has ZERO vision........

Even then I was willing......we talked about it for some time, and she described that they were infected and it was draining down his throat, and behind the eyes. He would have had both eyes removed and she said very likely more surgeries to remove the infectious areas.

Despite how badly I NEEDED to save this guy, and knowing how this particular vet treats homeless cats as if they are as important to fix as owned cats are, which I adore about her, (rare!) she really convinced me that the right thing was to let him go.

We both bawled like babies for him as we put him to rest.

Likely marked her memory as well. His sheer suffering and pain alone can't easily be forgotten, I know this of her.

She's an angel of a vet, the most caring I have ever had.

2 months later I trapped his feral mom and she lives with me out in my cat room after I had all her teeth removed. Her and Destiny (my other cat room resident who had her ears removed from cancer) are as close as I have ever seen 2 cats can be. One won't eat without the other, etc. They sleep together even, same bed :) Both ferals, homeless, but not anymore. Fat, happy, healthy, and well loved.

I wish I could say the same for Buddy :(

I too encourage you to neuter your cat. I also encourage you to keep your cat inside, rather than letting him out.

I just adopted Porter, a 10 year old cat who had a wound on his shoulder. It has taken over a month and about 500$ in vet bills to get that wound healed. The vet called it a deep tissue puncture, said that in tact male cats give these to other animals that cross their territory. They get infected and are difficult to heal.

I think Buddy would've known you tried your best, nice for him to know kindness at last, and pain relief.  Sounds so nasty what happened to him and I think you made the right choice tbh, even tho very hard. Hard when we can't rescue all of them huh?  Am delighted that you've got his mum safe and sound and having a best mate. Lovely to read! Just goes to show with kindness and TLC an animal can become so happy and content and it sounds like they really are! I love animals and it gives me the biggest grin when people take on rescues and give them a good chance to be happy. Good on you and everyone here who does this, kudos.

Great vet too, keep hold of that one!

I know people are trying to help the OP by giving examples of why it is best and kindest to neuter a male cat, but we have now got very far away from discussing the original cat. Please do try not to hijack threads and keep personal examples relevant.

@soombom, I do hope you understand why we are all so keen to encourage you to get your cat neutered. Please do ask if you have any more questions.

This is probably easier for you to find.    :)

But neutering of boys is usually cheaper than neutering "spaying" of girls.   It is a big operation on girls, a very small operation on boys.

It's hard to say for people who don't live there. Plus every vet has different prices. Call the vet in your town and ask what his charge is.

Like others have said, wait until he is big and healthy because weak kitties shouldn't have surgery.

Above the box where you are typing in a reply, scroll your mouse over the box icon that says insert images, click that, another box will pop up, click upload files, it will go to your pics and click on the pic.
