I have a foster with a URI and he is eating very little. He is very active and playful so I know he feels fine. His URI is mild but he does still have some congestion. I'm guessing that he isn't real food motivated to begin with and now maybe can't smell the food very well because of the congestion so just isn't interested in eating. He is eating a little bit but just not enough. He'll take a bite or two then stop. He won't eat dry food at all.

I thought any fishy food would be stinky but I opened one that I had in the pantry and it didn't have hardly any smell at all.

I tried baby food. He licked up a couple of teaspoons then stopped.

I really don't want to have to force feed him but he isn't getting enough nutrition with how little he is eating. Assuming the problem is that he can't smell the food I'm hoping to find something extra stinky that he'll be interested in.

So, what is the stinkiest canned cat food you know of????

FRISKIES! I fed this to my kitty when she was sick. It got her to eat. I could smell the stuff all the way down the hall. I used Ocean Whitefish because I figured that would smell the most. (Yes, I know about fish and I know ocean whitefish is particularly bad, it was only while she was sick, though.)

Thanks! I tried some Friskies that I have on hand but it wasn't a fishy one. I'll try the Ocean Whitefish.

At this point any quibbles about the ingredients just don't matter. He needs nourishment.

Anyone else with a suggestion?

I tend to stick to the grain-free brands, and they are all pretty much the same in smell I find, although I cracked open a can of Nature's Variety grain-free Chicken this morning and it was quite aromatic. Its high protein, low carb and the consistency can best be described as a combination of chunky pate.

I don't know what your budget for fosters is, but the Nature's Variety line can be pricey but good value for what you get.

The Hound & Gatos Trout is THE stinkiest food I have ever opened.

I believe the specific type of Friskies I bought was the Special Diet Ocean Whitefish. Special Diet was supposed to be formulated with the urinary tract in mind. (I never figured out why a fish flavor was still on the UTI safe list, but I wasn't using it for that so I never looked that hard for an answer.)

I just bought some Stella & Chewy freeze dried "kibble" the other day to use as a food topper. It was the fish one, and boy does it smell fishy! Wiggies loves them. Very effective (but pricey) way to entice him to eat.
Some of the Wild Calling cans smell delicious, quite frankly, but I use so many different kinds that I can't think of a specific one right now.

The Friskies Ocean Whitefish gets my vote, too. I gave the ladies some once and I almost barfed when I opened it. They didn't like it, either. Second place goes to Poultry Platter.

What pushylady said reminds me that Stewart's Freeze Dried Liver treats stink, too, use that as a topper. What's great is that the Stewart's brand is raw freeze dried. I held my breath every time I opened the Stewart's container.

It's not been mentioned but have you tried heating up the food in a microwave for a just few seconds. We often heat up Hound and Gatos they sell only large cans and the extra gets refrigerated but when I heat it up, boy is that stuff stinky but the cats love it and meow very loudly.  Maybe that would work for your kitten.

I was trying out different H&G varieties for Alaina a year ago (we ended up going with the beef variety) but right when I took off the lid of the Trout variety I almost fainted. Alaina loved it though.
IMO it's one of the stinkiest ones out there.

Hope your foster starts eating soon. It can be really hard to get food in those kitty mouths, especially when they can't taste most kinds.

Friskies Tuna and Egg was pretty strong.
Thanks! I'll add that to my shopping list.

Good idea! Since he's been eating so little I've only been putting 1/2 a can down and refrigerating the rest. I do heat the other half can before I give it to him but I'm not sure at this point if he reacted better to the heated food. He has eaten more at some times than at others. Maybe it was the heated food he liked better. I'll pay more attention to that. Thanks!

I've never heard of that brand. I'll see if I can find it. Thanks!

It's at Petsmart in the dog section. Since it's just one ingredient it's good for kitties, too, though. I believe TCS has a review on it. The chicken liver tears apart pretty easily, while the beef liver is more like a jerky and not as smelly, so get the chicken.

Note that it's called "Gimborn" in the link. I think Stewart's and  Gimborn are related.

UPDATE

Last night I picked up the Purinea   Friskies foods and the freeze dried liver. He was completely disinterested in the Friskies. He would put the liver in his mouth but then let it drop out.

I called the shelter and asked if his previous owner had put what foods he ate on his incoming form and they had. It was Purinea One dried and canned. I'm going to get some of that this evening.

I also asked what his weight was when he was brought to the shelter. They said it was 10.9 lbs. He was 10.3 lbs when I got him 1 week ago.  When I weighted him last night he was at 9 lbs 14 oz. So he's been losing weight ever since he came to the shelter.  I'm starting to think there might be something going on in his mouth. If he doesn't eat the Purinea One tonight I'll take him to shelter for a vet exam tomorrow.

Thank you all for your help!

Thx for the update. Hoping it's nothing that can't be fixed easily.
Hopefully he'll eat the Purina One. At least he has a devoted and knowledgeable foster mom like you to help him through with it.
