Hi I am new to this site, but I am very worried about my cat Sydney. She is a house cat who got out a couple months ago and was injured by a neighbors dog. We brought her to the vet and she has been perfectly fine for awhile now. Just recently I noticed this sore/wound on her neck and it looks really bad to me. I would bring her to the vet, but it's very expensive for me. I just want to know if anyone knows what this could be and how to treat it?? I will definitely bring her to the vet if I need to.

I put some neosporin on it, that's why her fur looks odd in the picture. If I didn't, her fur lays flat. It basically looks like a hole into her flesh. Her behavior has not changed at all, she is still very happy and playful, she just gets annoyed if I come too close to it.
Thank you!!

Hi Dolly, welcome to the site. It looks like an abscess that burst open. I'm surprised the vet didn't find the wound when you had her there. Clean it with antibacterial soap. You can use a warm wet washcloth. I've had kitties that had this. You should call the vet in the morning. Probably because of all her hair the vet didn't feel the wound.

You think it could have lasted months? She has been home since early November.
How serious is this? Will she be okay? What will the vet do?
Thank you!!

She must of had another injury then. I missed the part it was a couple of months ago. She'll be fine. They look nasty . I personally treated mine without a vet but
I knew what to look for as far as getting worse. I kept it cleaned with antibacterial soap and wound ointment. Now I knew positively mine was an abscess that burst. Now since I missed the part about her injury happening months ago, she might have something else . If that is the case keep it clean and it should heal

If it doesn't look better within 24 hrs please call the vet. She could need oral antibiotics or it is something different. But if it is what my kitties have battled it will look better in 24 hrs.

Neosporin is okay to use so long as it is used in a spot that can't be licked. I use this occasionally on my cats for cuts and scrapes. Here is a link to more information : http://www.vetinfo.com/is-neosporin-safe-for-cats.html

The sore on her back looks like something that burst and what remains is smooth skin. The Neosporin is an antibiotic cream so depending on what this is, it may or may not help. This also looks like it could be ringworm. I would keep a close eye on this and check for other similar spots that show up elsewhere. If you find some, it could be ringworm which is contagious.

I know you mentioned not being able to get into the vet right now, but I would advise you to give them a call and see if you can get some guidance over the phone.

I would only apply warm compresses to the site several times a day. Neosporin made my cat Frankie worse as dirt, hair, liter sticks to it. My Frankie's wound was about 8 inches long and was strictly his fur that was open not his flesh. It required many stitches to close and he got it just playing in the house near an old desk that the handles had points on the end, very dull points but enough when he got caught ripped his fur from his body. Good luck.
