Hi Everyone On Saturday I got a kitty, 2 and a half month old, she seems ok but later when she run I noticed she was limping from 1 of her back legs, but because they brought the kitty at 4 and the kitty decide to explore at 6 I couldn't take her at that hour because my vet told me that he will attend till 6 that day (just in case I call the vet before they brought the cat) :(. So because she seems super happy and only when running that happened I thought: ok tomorrow morning a good check up. The thing is I took her to the vet and he told me that she had a broken hip and that the left side was already healed but the right side hasn't (so they brought me a unhealthy cat :( how horrible of them). The vet told me that because it was the hip it didn't need surgery it will heal itself if I put her on a crate for a month (my feelings were noooooooo poor cat!!!) So now I have her on a crate and take her out for her sandbox and feeding times. I sleep with her (take her out of the box and we sleep together). But the thing is she wants to go out all the time and walk (thankfully she is not yet the jumping and running type or she could hurt herself more). Finally my question is if I put her in an empty room with only her sandbox and food could I take her from her crate for a bit just so she can walk around and stretch her legs or just walking will make it heal horribly because as I said only the right side hasn't heal yet and when she walks she seems ok. I just want her to be happy and don't have stress for being in a cage all day for a month :(. Please help!

My cat broke his hind leg many years ago and was very unhappy in the crate - twisting and turning and spinning - doing quick turns in a small space is not good for healing a broken leg. My vet and I reached a compromise that it would be okay if I took *all* of the furniture out of a spare room (I kept a futon mattress on the ground) and put him in there for his 6 weeks of confinement. No more spinning, turning - he just mosied about at walk or mainly he was laying on the futon resting. With my cat, taking him in and out of crate would have made him more anxious in crate, and then more likely to run around the room. Being in the furnitureless room seemed the ideal solution. His bone healed perfectly.

I would talk to your vet about options like this (whether this kind of thing is okay for a stretching period or if it would be acceptable for longer periods). If you can put a mattress on the ground, you can sleep in there with kitty which is what I did. I also did something similar when another cat hurt his cruciate ligament badly, and it healed well. The idea of confinement is to stop the cat moving too much so the bone can heal - but if they are spinning/turning as agitated, this does not count as not moving - my vet thought a quiet resting cat in a furnitureless room was better than a panicky cat spinning in a crate. So I would talk to your vet.

The one to ask would be the vet, he could give you advise over the phone. Sometimes, as long as they don't jump from something, they can be let out to stretch a few times a day. I feel sorry for you, but just remember, no matter what, it's not forever! Thank you for caring for her, surely you will be blessed for your kindness!

Thank you so much you have given me hope!!!! I will talk to my vet right now about it. Thanfully mine is not rolling just sleeping in there but when she sees me she stands in her back legs and cry to be let out it, its really heartbreaking. One more question, did your cat sometimes play with her toys (like a toy mouse just laying and playing or did you take all her toys)

Thanks again!!!!!!!!

I talked to my vet and he told me he didnt see a problem with that if the cat was mostly resting yay. I just empty a room and take her out :). The only problem is that the stress of the crate make her anxious (which means she wants to play :( she is a bit too active) I hope after a bit she will calm down. Also now she wants to get out of the room  when I want to go out lol. Thanks again for sharing your experience :)
