I have had severe eczema my whole life, which gets better during the summer and with strong meds. It is in no way made worse by cats. My eczema was exactly the same whether I was living with or without cats (as in it did not get better when I went 4 years living in a house with no cats!). Unless she has a direct allergy to cats, then her eczema is going to be the same whether she's around your cat or not.

I doubt it will help tbh... eczema tends to be caused by a few things and hard to pinpoint. Fish, pollen, dust are just a few common triggers, so you could rehome your cat only to find that nothing has improved for your niece.

Personally speaking, unless you're 100% sure that your kitty is making her worse, I would not turf her out. You could also make sure that the cat never sleeps on the child's room or bedding etc to help matters in case she does have a cat allergy.

I also am a bit old fashioned and tend to think that unless it's making the childs life miserable, then it can be beneficial to help build up the immune system by exposure.

I have pretty chronic eczema myself and have 2 cats. From what I understand eczema is usually diet related and can also be triggered through fabrics and soaps/perfumes etc. If she has a direct allergy to cats then I could see that being a problem. I would not re-home my cats unless there was a direct allergy to the cats and have to agree with the other posters on this.

If possible I would try to keep the cat out of the room that your niece will be sleeping in and maybe look into seeing if changes to her diet may help her. There is tons of information online about eczema that might be helpful to you.

I recommend keeping her very moisturized especially in the winter months, try a oatmeal bath, bath her in baby oil and use soap that is not harsh like maybe dove moisturizing bar. (If you can uses that on babies).

My heart goes out to your niece, I certainly can relate as eczema is such a chronic and most uncomfortable skin disorder. Best of luck to you both.
