Hi everyone. I know some of you have sadly been through this and can probably tell me everything I need to know, so thank you in advance for your words. I took my cat to the vet Tuesday to have blood work done because she is on Clomipramine and needs to have her blood checked once a year. She only needed to be taken in by the vet tech, not seen by the vet. I do not know her exact age as I took all my kitties in as adult strays. I have her for 9 years so I am guessing she is at youngest, 11 years old. I got a call from the vet's office that the vet wants me to bring her in because her kidney level? was 2.5.  What exactly does that mean? She does not seem to be losing weight, but she does throw up often and it's usually yellow like bile. I have always associated this with her med because it's liquid and any medicine I give her she always throws up, she's a very neurotic cat. I can walk by her 20 times a day and she will absolutely know when I have the syringe in my hand (even hiding it) to give her the medicine and she runs. You think she'd be use to it by now lol. She has a history of peeing outside the box and licking the fur off her belly (2 of the reasons the vet put her on clomipramine) and believe me, I waited awhile to put her on that, it wasn't something I did at first site of issues with her.  Just wondering what anyone can tell me about the 2.5 kidney level. Is that function, etc? I'm not sure. Our appointment is on the 15th so I hate to guess until then.  Thank you

Hi

It sounds like the Vet was describing the creatinine levels as 2.5 as that is a commonly measured substance, but it could have been something else.  2.5 is higher than normal but you have to look at the whole picture to get a sense of where your cat's kidney function is.  One of the problems with kidney issues is it usually takes a lot of kidney function loss before blood tests start showing anything wrong.  if there is good news is that some cats can live with it for a long time and that it can be managed.  Many cats also start drinking more water and peeing more if there is loss of function.  A test of specific gravity (how well your cat can concentrate his urine) is an important test for kidney function.  A good article is here. http://www.felinecrf.com/tests0.htm

I have a kidney cat, and I honestly have no idea what a kidney level of 2.5 means

I'm suspecting, as Stephenq said, that it's simply ONE of the levels on her CBC (probably her Creatinine).  IS she drinking and urinating more than usual?  Those are classic signs of kidney disease, as well as losing weight.  When my girl was first diagnosed with early stages of it, her creatinine was 2.8, and the Vet told us not to worry about doing anything for her except try to get her to eat foods lower in phosphorus.

Have you scheduled to take her back in for the follow-up, or at least called to get more information?  Once you know for sure what you're dealing with, if it IS kidney disease, that link provided above is my "go to".  It includes a chart for both canned and dry foods and their phosphorus content.  Keep in mind that canned food is best because of it's moisture content.

Let us know once you know for sure.  Yes, there are, sadly, lots of us with experience with kidney cats.
