Hi ChristineMarie, I really hope you feel better soon. I hate having colds, when I got one it use to take me weeks to get rid of it. That was until I discovered.............. Echinacea tablets !!!

I swear by them, they really do work for me. I start taking them as soon as I feel a cold coming on. The cold doesn't turn into a full blown cold I just get a few symptoms and within 2-3 days its gone. They really are amazing and I highly recommend them.

Thanks for the advice Gem! I couldn't find Echinecea tablets but did get Ricola green tea with Echinacea lozenges & they are very soothing... :) Also just took Vicks Sinex daytime sinus relief capsules & will see if that does anything to shrink my poor swollen dripping nose... ugggh

It's not for the faint at heart but....try a cup of tea with honey, lemon and a shot of brandy. It's nasty going down I only do it if I'm truley miserable.

How could anyone drink such a vile concoction!
Now why didn't I think of that, the sheer nastiness of it would have gotten rid of my evil cold days ago.  Dang.

Sadly no brandy in the house so I'll have to give that a miss, but I might just go get the lemon and honey....  been on the echinacea here but it hasn't chased my 'bug' away yet and I'm thinking mine's got a sneaky viral thing behind it.  (Big fan of it most of the time and like the tea too).  I've even resorted to the chemist Cold and Flu Lemsip stuff this week and that is not like me at all.  Only way I can get a decent sleep and cope with a day at work without feeling like my head's about to fall off.

Also like Olibas Oil:  It doesn't help you get over colds quicker but it can help clear the breathing aparatus short term a bit like Vicks does.  Not to put near kitties though as no doubt got all kinds of essential oils that are toxic for them in it.

I hope you feel better soon ChristineMarie.  I'm done with cold day 5 and getting very fed up.

This works for me all the time. I keep it mixed up in a pint jar by the kitchen sink.

Mix equal proportions of honey and apple cider vinegar. At the very first sign of a cold, start taking it by the tablespoon. Take it all day several times and again the next day. By then I am well, no cold, no sore throat, all better.

I seem to remember that ol folk cure around when I was a kid... my mom used it. Well I tried the Vicks Sinex & after 2 1/2 hours the stuff hasn't dried me up a bit! :( So I'm thinking of running back to the store tomorrow & trying your vinegar & honey- but eegad, I remember also finding its taste absolutely nauseating to get down the hatch!

The first dose of it will take your breath. But you get used to it. I find it works better to start it at once at first sign of cold or sore throat. But it will help you even now to feel better. By the way, yes some might call me old.

I swear by Alkaseltzer cold and flu, the capsules, not the drink. I finally got some into week TWO of my flu and it helped with a lot of the symptoms. I've never been so miserable for so long, over two weeks of absolutely no ambition, extreme weakness and tiredness, and for 4 days feeling like someone beat me up with a baseball bat. Even my hair hurt! Now the only thing I've got left is the cough. And then to top it all off I had to work on one of my days off!
Oh, and by the way, I HAD A FLU SHOT!

I bet if you added enough honey it wouldn't!!! Or add some flavored vodka and you won't care!!!  (just kidding!)

Precisely why I will not take one! May look for your suggestion of the AlkaSelzer capsules... sure not happy with the Vicks Sinex just tried!

Warm soaks, Vick's vapor rub, good foods, plenty of fluids...hope you feel better soon.

I can't take immune stimulators like echinacea but if it helps, by all means take it.

When I have a cold or flu, I take Benylyn-All-In-One Cold and Flu.  It takes away most of the symptoms, especially the stuffy or runny nose, which is what bugs me the most about a cold.

I also take on a daily basis the following which help build up the immune system:

Odorless Garlic capsules

Royal Jelly capsules

Zinc

Vitamin C

Vitamin D

And when I remember to buy it, Cold-FX.

Things you can do to help soothe you:

1.  Humidify the air either by boiling water on the stove, or running the shower for awhile.  You can also sit near the stove while you are boiling the water so you can inhale the vapour;

2.  Hot tea with lemon and honey

3. Avoid dairy products when you have a cold or flu because dairy produces mucus which contributes to your misery.

4.  Don't suppress your cough with cough suppressants.  You want to get rid of whatever is sitting in your lungs so you don't get an infection.  When you do cough, make it count.  Hold a pillow or stuffed animal tightly against your chest in the biggest, strongest bear hug that you can, and cough while you are doing that.  That will reduce the pressure you exert on your internal organs, help prevent strained muscles from coughing, and give you a more forceful cough.

It's important to stay hydrated also.  Tea, juice, water.

I tend to get Sinus Infections instead of colds.  I use Mucinex-D.  I have been told that this is also useful for upper respiratory infections and head colds too.
