I made the mistake of leaving a new bag of food on top of the dryer (5 feet from the completely full food bowls, I should add) and one of my cats ripped it open. There are a couple of scratches and a couple of bite holes in the bag. Should I put everything into zip lock bags, then put them somewhere dark so the light can't ruin it, or would that not keep the food fresh for the 8-12 weeks it will take me to use it all up? Would slapping some duct tape over the holes be sufficient?

I don't see why not. As long as you put the duct tape on the inside and outside of the bag.
Otherwise I would suggest you could buy one of them huge plastic storage containers to put the dry food in :D

My current plastic container is full and holds about 5 lbs of food, and I'm not buying a 3x larger one for this one instance. I guess it's zip locks then, cos I don't see how I can tape the inside of a closed bag. Opening the bag to find the holes would just add even more air to the mix.

Oh I didn't realise you hadn't open the bag - sorry completely my fault teach me to read when half asleep :anon:

If its not opened yeah I would just stick some duct tape on the outside. I've done this before with no problems

If you're concerned about the sticky side touching the cat food, perhaps put a cotton ball, or even just a small piece of paper over top, before you duct tape it.

Remember - duct tape is the answer to all!!! I love it.

Mind you, I love storage bins too.

Mine have done this. Packing tape should do it, and then hide it. Mine open cabinets when hungry so in the hall maybe?

I have a large plastic container on wheels that I use for cat litter - it is suppose to be for dry kibble you might look into that.  Most stores carry these.
