Kitty eating less, sleeping more, not interested in play, vomited...?

My kitty, Lux, is usually all about food but for the past few days he has seemed disinterested. He has been eating about half his usual amount of food - he can be picky sometimes, so I thought it was just about getting a new one. I got him a wet food he liked and he is eating enough of that, and some nibbles of dry food (I recently succeeded in supplementing a high-quality dry with a high-quality wet - he used to eat the dry food and his Greenies only). What really concerns me is he's sleeping or resting twice as much as normal, and not playing nearly as much. He used to have tons of energy...but even in the middle of the night last night, he was just asleep...just as he'd been during the day. I used to throw treats for him as a way to get him some exercise and he would bolt after them, going so fast he slid on my hardwood floor...now he just strolls after it, if at all. It has gotten colder rapidly in the past few days, so perhaps it is a response to that. But to top it off, I came home from running errands last night to find a light pink puddle on my bathroom floor, with little clumps of cat litter and hair mixed in, as well as cat grass. He is a long hair, so it's good to see that some of the hair in his tummy has found its way out but...light pink? I think this is veering away from normal cat behaviour now, but I need some input before I go to the vet - sometimes I can be a hypochondriac.

Note: I also just changed his Sentry Pheromone Collar the other day, after the month had passed. I use it as a transitional treatment in helping him overcome his anxious temperament. A few days before the change, he was going wild and back to his usual anxious self...but in the few days following that, he seemed more and more lethargic, yet anxious as well. He is breathing quickly...I counted 48 times in a minute when he has been moving around. It goes down to 15 when he is sleeping/relaxing. I put the collar on him yesterday and it seems to soothe him, but he is still lethargic. He looks generally kind of mournful to me, but I could be superimposing that on him through my worry. It's tough in my situation to figure out if it's he that has the problem or if it's me, because I have anxiety issues and can blow slightly worrying things out of proportion. :S

The combination of symptoms is definitely cause for concern. I would agree with a vet visit. Many vibes for Lux.

Thank you. Lux has never been sick before. Can you suggest what tests I should have run at the check-up?

How old is he? Does he have a history of vomiting occasionally? Does he have a history of eating non-food items, like litter? Could he have gotten into anything toxic?

I'm sure the vet will suggest some tests after a physical exam. The vomit is especially worrisome. The light pink color could indicate upper GI bleeding, either from some kind of irritation or an obstruction. Seeing litter in the vomit is not a good sign. Sometimes cats who are anemic will eat clay litter. I would recommend a full blood panel and maybe some imaging if the vet thinks that it's warranted.

cprcheetah: Thanks for your input.

vball91: He's 2 1/2. He used to vomit occasionally when I first got him, as well as poop and pee around the house, but I think that was mostly from the stress of being newly adopted and my former roommate's cat hating him. He doesn't have those issues anymore and rarely vomits. I have seen him eat random things off the floor and hair as well, not sure about litter eating...I don't think I've ever seen that in his vomit. Thanks for your recommendations.

I took him to the vet. He was done the check-up 20 minutes before close, with a cat needing operation and another dog appointment, so X-rays and bloodwork have to wait until tomorrow. He said there are no major symptoms that point to an illness...that can be recognized from external symptoms - except for that he is struggling to breathe, and his vomit has blood in it (I found other little spots around the house). I'm going back tomorrow.

The good news is he has been acting and looking better - he's dashing around more, has been more playful, eating more, and been more of his spunky self rather than the shockingly subdued kitty he was before. This is soothing as I wait for a response from Farley Foundation, which should get back tomorrow - the symptoms he displayed were no joke, and I found a new one today - poop in my bedroom. He never goes outside the litter box, being the extremely meticulous cat he is, even for a cat; it's worrying. But that I successfully got him to play for a few minutes, and that he's jumping and running more, and sleeping less, is really great. Interestingly enough, he seemed to get a lot better after my partner came home from his business trip, but that just may be a coincidence. I also upped the amount of wet vs. dry food I was feeding him, which I'm sure helped a lot.

I got the X-ray and full blood panel. Blood work was said to be normal. The vet also said nothing was alarming about the x-ray, but there was a smattering of white dots in his lungs, and his stools were too many. He still breathes heavily and wheezes, and is not pooping as much as is normal for a cat. He is getting his playfulness back though, and seems more energetic. I just feel really frustrated with these results, and I don't know where to go from here! I don't want to find out he had an underlying medical condition and end up with him even more sick a year or two from now.

I wouldn't worry too much about him pooping outside the box, stressed or sick cats often do that and go back to the box when they are better. Giving more wet food is definitely a good idea, and encourage water too. A cat laxative (usually sold for hairballs) might be a good idea too, rub it on his paw to lick off if he won't eat it. Good luck and keep us posted!

Thank you! I have been adding some water to it, and I think I'll grab some hairball remedy Greenies. I put an herbal calmer on them that he just loves, so it's like two treats in one. I think getting so much attention might have helped him. He's been more and more affectionate as he's been feeling better. Can you recommend anything in regards to the breathing issue? He tends to breathe like he's congested.
