Hi, I'm new and this is my first post, I really hope someone can help me. Okay so two weeks ago I adopted an 8 week old kitten from a shelter in Long Island. He's a super tiny tuxedo male. They told me he was born a stray but it only took a few days for him to really warm up to us.

I live in front of a landscaping company and there are a lot of stay cats that wonder around the site. As fate would have it, about a week after we adopted our kitten, a very pregnant female cat started to get comfortable on our porch. None of the other strays ever come up to our house, yet here she was making a home for herself in an old crate by our outside table. So I started leaving some food outside for her and one day she just invited herself inside. At first my kitten was a little weary of her, but she just made a bed for herself behind our tv so I figured I'd let her stay, give birth, then get her fixed so she doesn't have more babies.

The problem is, it's been almost a week since she showed up, and suddenly she does NOT get along with my kitten. He doesn't actively seek her out, but when she crosses the room, if he sees her, he'll slowly creep up to her and arch his back. Then she'll start to growl real low, then he'll take a few steps closer and she'll hiss and swipe at him. That would end it at first. She'd leave and hide, he'd follow her and they'd just stare at each other for a while until he got bored and wandered away. But now it's been getting a bit worse. I give them both equal attention, I have litter boxes on opposite sides of the house and two feeding areas. But she's been getting more affectionate and wants to sit in my lap, and then he'll run over and they growl and hiss at each other until she tries to hit him.

Can this be fixed?? I was really hoping they could be friends and after I get her spayed she could stay with us. But if she and my little guy don't get along that won't be able to happen. Please help!

It may be just because shes pregnant. Pregnant cats feel more protective and their attitude may change towards cats that they previously got along with. Sometimes my queens will be aggresive towards another cat, then after she gives birth they are friends again. The little kitty also seems to intrigue her, which probably irritates her. You just have to wait and see how she is after giving birth, maybe she'll be more motherly towards the kitten then (:

I agree with Desu.  also, I think the kitten tries to play of sorts.  warlike games in this case.  but she isnt fond of games, war games or otherwise.  No merry chasing, no merry wrestling matches for her.  Not now.

I know kittens want to play.  Also, I have difficult to imagine a kitten of barely 10 weeks would be territorial against  an essentially friendly  cat.

You shall probably held them apart for the time being.  she being high preg doesnt has the mind for unnecessary problems.

Otherwise you are thinking, doing and planning entirely right, along the best traditions of  TCS!

Tx for caring!

Good luck!

Hi, I took in a cat in August and she was fine with my other cats.  In November she was getting nasty with everyone. I thought she was just trying to wean her kittens, but found out that she was pregnant.  After giving birth she has been fine with everyone else except for one cat.  For some reason most of my cats are not getting along with this one cat.  I have 21 cats in the house and for the most part we have no problems.  I would try to separate your two when they cant be supervised so the young kitten doesn't get hurt.
