We think Rick had it. He got very sick Saturday morning and I wanted him to go to the ER, but he's feeling better today. Either it was food poisoning or he had a very bad stomach bug. Vomiting, diarrhea, the whole bit. Ugly, it was. He spent the day in bed or on the sofa, wrapped up in the electric blanket. My sister and BIL were supposed to come for dinner on Saturday night. I called them around noon and told them to forget it. I told them to come in, grab half the sponge cake, and leave again. And that's what they did.

The only thing that Rick ate differently than me was a quarter pounder with cheese and bacon from McD's on Friday night. He was really hungry for one so he grabbed one on the way home from the mall. We had the hot sausage sandwiches from the crock pot on Thursday and he also had the leftover sausage with a few onions and peppers on Friday. Plus the McD's.

I've felt fine and I think that if it was a stomach virus, I would have come with it, too. Maybe it's on its way over to me and I just don't know it yet. He's feeling much better this morning and has been keeping food down so far today. But he says it's going to be awhile before he goes to McD's again.

I already have the liver thawed from the freezer and can't re-freeze it. So I am making liver and onions for myself today for dinner. Rick will be having hot tea with unbuttered toast.

Ugh. I hope he feels better soon and you don't catch it. :cross: :vibes:

I had food poisoning once while we were on vacation and it was just awful.

I've had food poisoning once. From crawfish. I haven't been that sick in years.

Generally food poisoning comes on in a matter of minutes to a few hours from what I understand. Mine was about an hour after I ate. But I won't say that Rick doesn't have food poisoning. As far as viruses go, I got the flu one year and no one around me did. I've had stomach bugs and no one got it and I've been around stomach bugs and not gotten them.

I hope he feels better and that you don't catch it.

I've only had food poisoning once and it was from a sausage biscuit from McD's.  Luckily it was the kind that only last a few hours.  This is gross but I was sitting on the toilet and holding a pan, I had to do both at the same time.  It didn't last very long but it was the sickest I had ever been.  I knew something wasn't right with it so I spit out the one bite I had taken and threw it away.  I still got enough of the bug to make me sick.

I had it once, it was the worst I've ever been sick in my life.  Stomach cramps were awful.  From coleslaw, I think it sat out unrefrigerated and the mayo got warm.

In 2011, as a lot of you know, I thought I had food poisoning and let it go for too many days. I ended up in the ICU with salmonella and C.diff. I almost died. My BP was down to 51/44. So, the point I want to make is: If you don't start getting better in 24 hours, please go to the ER.

Poor Rick!  I hope he is better now!  I too had some sort of awful bug/food poisoning like that a few days before Christmas when DH and I were engaged.  I had driven his car home because he had picked me up and was too tired to drive me home.  My parents and step-siblings were going away for Christmas and I was going with DH to his parent's house while a friend of mine came to my house to dog and cat sit.  I started getting sick a couple hours before my family hit the road.  A few hours later they were gone and I was so sick I had to call DH; who had to wake his room mate to get him to drive him to my house so he could take me to the ER.  I almost had to run to the ER bathroom while they were trying to check me in.  It was miserable!!  They gave me meds to help stop the sickness.  I was able to rehydrate on my own; thank the Lord.  I was scared of the IV so I refused it.

My friend ended up packing my suitcase for me and we still made it to DH's mother's for Christmas.  I think just a day late.

Thanks, everybody! Now we're not so sure what it is and he is going to the doctor today. He's keeping light foods down......I defrosted some chicken broth and added a few noodles to the broth. He kept that down yesterday, along with a wee small piece of that cake. No way was he going without cake.
But he's got a horrible headache, almost like my migraines. No way can he work like that. And he's very weak. It could still be food poisoning, but I'm wondering if he might have a bug now.

Off work today and he will make a doctor's appt.

Very good advice.  Another danger that comes from terrible diarrhea and vomiting is electrolyte imbalance.  My biggest concern right now other than e- imbalance is the headache.  That's something I'd be calling the healthcare provider immediately about, if not going to the ER.  When I had meningitis years ago, I had terrible vomiting and the worst headache I ever had.  I'm not trying to upset you, but I'd be getting him in somewhere today.

Terry and Peaches, you're so right. He is making the appt this morning. As for the electrolyte issue, he has been keeping Gatorade down (our doctor always recommends Gatorade and I bought that right away on Saturday). He kept the broth and noodles down, too, for the most part. It's just that headache at this point.

Thank you.

Just got back from the doctor.....they took him right away this morning. It is not food poisoning; doctor thinks it's probably some kind of a bug. (His reasoning is that if it was food poisoning, there would be more people complaining, not just Rick.) The headache is from him being so severely dehydrated. Stopped at the store and got more Gatorade. He is going back home and going to bed under the electric blanket. I brought some cans of Mountain Dew up from the basement and stuck them in the fridge for him to get some caffeine, too.

I'm glad it's not food poisoning. Honestly, I try to be so clean about food and meals, especially with the cats in the house. I try to use freezer stuff fairly quickly and cook everything properly. I thought it was something I did....you know how your mind works in situations like this. I was more than a little frightened that I did this to him.

Thankfully, he's OK, he just needs to rest.

Right, peaches. My potassium level was so low it didn't even register on the blood tests. They had to give me both IV potassium and potassium pills. Gatorade is wonderful, I agree, but I couldn't keep even water down. One swallow of water or gatorade and I would puke it right back up.

I'm glad it's not more serious.  And yes, any fluid he'll hold down is awesome.

That's scary, catspaw.  I'm glad you got help right away with that!

Glad to hear it's not something ominous like meningitis. My boss had that, was out of work for weeks.

I think resting and being pampered some will help Rick feel better soon. Take good care of yourself and don't kiss him. :lol3:
