Kitten shall be rather plump!  Its the normal for them healthy kittens.  Even more than for human children.

They use to begin to eat some "normal" food at 4 weeks, but use to nurse the mom to at least 6- 8 weeks,  at 8 weeks you can encourage them to end.    And if you dont afford or by any other reason cant have them till 12 weeks, 8 weeks leaving mom and siblings is the minimum.   Not earlier.

collars?  its really not necessary, unless you think they can sneak out.   It is NOT recommendable to let small kittens out alone.  1. they are totally defenceless agains any danger.  2. They have no feel of own territory, and go easily astray.  They perhaps run after a fly, and its done - you do have your kitten gotten astray...

That said, it is surely wise to learn them to different things as kittens, so they wont have problems later on.

Have a collar, have a harness, eat both wet and dry cat food, drink goat milk or plain youghurt,  the same blended with raw egg yolk...  met some friendly children, perhaps met a cat friendly dog...

Learn them to be bathed.  Even if you normally never need to bathe an inside only cat,  its wise you can do it if necessary.

Say, 5-6-7 weeks are good for training.   A little later too of course, if they are still at home.   Which is one of the reasons they are recommended to be 12 weeks with mom and siblings - there is so much to learn!

Etc...

Good luck!

I would like to get two small red collars for my two boys.  They are out and about in the yard now, and when they do go and stray into the neighbors' yards, I want to make sure that EVERYONE knows that these boys have homes.

Do you have some recommendations as to types?

Thanks!

All cat collars MUST be breakaway types - ones that either come apart when pulled or that can stretch easily to allow the cat's head to pass through. Every year there are terrible accidents where cats get caught on their collars and can't escape, or hang themselves. Even elastic ones don't always work as they should - my Bonaparte, having already lost several collars, was found by a neighbour with his paw through his collar, in great distress. Now, although he is an outside cat, I don't have a collar on him - the risk was too great. He knows his way around and all the neighbours know him. My other cats, though mostly indoor cats, do wear collars with tags just in case they ever escape.

I have found that the best time to start is around 4 months old, with a gentle elastic collar, not too tight. They get used to it very quickly.
