Dear [insert the shameful people’s names here],

When you moved away, you failed to pack up something very important. You remembered to pack everything up from the garage and you remembered to pack everything up from under the deck, looks like the storage rooms were all emptied and the top shelves in your closets were all cleared. You remembered to pack the dog crate, the dog food/toys, and of course, the dog! I just find it really strange that you remembered to pack up all of the mentioned items yet your 10 year old orange and white cat was left roaming around outside your empty house.  Did you realize that you left your cat behind?

In your defense, maybe this is not something that you realized! Perhaps you have suffered from some kind of brain damage that led you to forget that you had another member of your family that depended on you… that’s the only way I can understand it, brain damage. However, this is doubtful. If you could remember to pack up that old bin of dusty old books and your collection of Christmas decorations then I’m almost certain that you could remember to pack up your kitty too! So this then leads me to believe that you do not suffer from a debilitating brain ailment, you are just a negligent, selfish, and heartless human being. I now feel great concern for the degree of care that your dog receives.

So this girl, was left to fend for herself as she roamed around the familiar area of her home while no one was there to let her inside while she waited at the door. Did you know that in February it gets really cold in Canada? Hmm… I don’t think you can use your brain damage as an excuse for not being aware of the harshness of Canadian winters. Fortunately enough, your neighborly neighbor saw to it that this girl was receiving food and some care, yet was probably not aware that this girl also required insulin shots twice a day…

You intentionally left this girl to die.

I personally have never had to surrender a pet, I cannot imagine a reason that would ever force me to do so BUT I am familiar with how to go about doing it in a way that ensures the pet will be safe. So you’re obviously too much of a coward to walk her into a shelter or the SPCA and surrender her to the staff there. Sometimes these places require you to pay a surrender fee, which is actually just a donation as these shelters are typically non-profit, so maybe you’re not comfortable paying that fee either.  Ok, whatever. At the very least, you could have secured her in a carrier or in a box with a warm blanket and some food and left her outside the door of one of these shelters… with a note informing the staff that she is a diabetic and to please take care of her because you no longer can. But instead, you had a death wish for her.

Did you know that she has got the loudest purrs I have ever heard from a cat? She sounds like a pigeon cooing! She is so affectionate and loves to rub up against legs and curl up on a warm lap for a nap! I wonder if you knew this….if she ever purred for you.

Fortunately, there are a number of kind people that restored this girl’s faith in humanity after the destructive state you left her in. The wonderful rescue shelter is funding her veterinary costs and insulin costs until they can find her a loving forever home. The vet is quite confident that we can get her into diabetic remission with a proper diet so that she will no longer require insulin shots! So until then, she is with me in her safe and loving foster home where she can receive her shots every 12 hours and where her food intake can be monitored.  In other words, she’s going to be ok. There are responsible people who will pick up your slack, as I’m sure you’ve had your whole life.

This letter is not meant to reassure you or shame you, as I highly doubt that you have the capacity for either of those emotions. Instead, this letter is meant to reassure all the good people out there that care about this cat! There is now one less cat we have to worry about, unless of course you see yourself fit to adopt another one. I pray this will never happen and I pray for your dog’s well-being.  Perhaps I’ve been raised quite differently than you because I CANNOT for the life of me comprehend how you sleep at night.

Regards,

Hazel & her Foster mom

YES!! I have written similar letters to the former owners of my rescued dogs. I wish I knew enough about Porter's story to tell you what happened to him, but I don't. The shelter staff lied to my daughter. They told her that they'd had him for two years and that his previous owner had passed away and had no family and that he was going to be euthanized that day, but his intake paperwork says that they'd had him for less than two weeks, so I will never know what really happened.

All I know for sure is that at some point, some sad excuse for a human being failed Porter and left him to fend for himself. He got hurt in the process and I am now paying for his veterinary care to get him well. I won't allow that mistake to be repeated.

Welcome, Hazel and Foster Mom. This is a great place. I'm new here myself, but I've learned a lot already and everyone here is very supportive.

Great letter! At work we just helped rehome two declawed cats that were left behind, outside, by their owners. Over the 8 years we've been open we've taken in and rehomed over 20 animals that we've found wandering the busy country highway. People think that because it's the country the animal will find food. They don't seem to realize that house pets are not wild animals. I can't imagine leaving my babies behind, especially the ones with medical issues.

I truly hope they CAN"T sleep at night! But you know what, they always do somehow. I just want to cry when I think of how bewildered and scared she was. God bless you for caring for her! I'm feeding a beautiful, pregnant little black and white tuxedo that someone dumped by our house. I just don't understand how people can do this when our highs right now are in the single digits! I still don't know what to do with her, but at least she's being fed, and being a female the ferals around here should leave her alone. It's just heartbreaking! I'll pray for a home for them both!

This letter just broke my heart and I am presently crying. I will never understand how humans can be so cruel! You have to be a psychopath. They have no feelings for anything but themselves. I know my sister is one. Diagnosed!!!! Considering that this is an inherited condition, we have more psychopaths now then ten yrs. ago.

Animal cruelty is the norm for these kind. My heart breaks everyday. I LOVE what you wrote. Everyone on this site understands your anger. God bless you for helping this sweetie pie!

It truly is just so disturbing that people can get away with such horrible treatment of animals.... in Canada, we have had a couple instances of police/mountie dogs that have been killed while in the line of duty, and there have been public outcries of the sentences that these criminals receive. Animal cruelty sentences are no worse than a slap on the wrist in my opinion. So the gov is in the process of passing "Quanto's Law" which hopefully, will equate the killing of a police dog to the killing of a police man/woman in terms of sentencing. But other than that, and it hasn't even been passed yet... there are no real effective laws that protect our animals. We've all heard horrible stories of animal cruelty, and the max sentence is 5 years ONLY for these maniacs.

If anyone wants to jump on the vigilante train with me, I'd love to take matters into my own hands!!

Thank goodness for people like all of you on this forum who go out your way to help an animal in need. I really do question what the ratio is sometimes... for every 1 bad person there are 100 good ones or vice versa? Coming on here restores my own faith in humanity.

Thanks for letting me vent, everybody!

I'm so glad Hazel was found and is being cared for! Just another reason why I like animals better than humans.

yelledstWell unless it's a police dog you can count on no other creature getting justice. A guy, who recently, tortured and killed a twelve week old kitten, will get only supervised probation.

Colorado sucks with their animal laws. The animal control is no better. I had a incident where 2 females had kittens under my house. I bought a trap to try to humanly trap them. At that time Colorado Springs did not have a T.N.R. program so I would have to call for them to pick up. I didn't like the idea , 80% of felines are p.t.s. here but we have a 4 pet law and you will be heavily fined for breaking it and your animals will be confiscated.

Anyway a neighbor put a container of food with poison on my property. 3, two kittens and one of the mom's died.

When I called the humane society and told them what happened, they told me the officer would be out. I waited. I called 3 times before the animal control officer showed up.

I gave him the container of food with the poison. He yelled at me, this is molded. What am I suppose to do with this? I told him if you would of come 3 wks ago when I first called it wouldn't be moldy. Then he yelled
at me again, this is not C.S.I. we wouldn't do anything with it anyway. So the person who killed these poor babies got away with it. No investigation. I'm the one who got yelled at for waisting his time.

Jodie, I lost a dog to secondhand poisoning two years ago. My neighbors had put down commercial grade rodent bait in their garage. He caught one or more of the dying mice and swallowed it whole. None of us knew what had happened until it was too late. When I told them what happened to my dog, they told me that they'd lost several pets in their own home over the years, two schnauzers and two cats, and never could figure out why. After they found out, they removed the bait from their property. Not long after that, the local news reported a string of animal poisonings on the other end of town from me. Someone was tossing meatballs loaded with rat poison into the yards of known dog owners, then someone put anti-freeze in the water bowls at the dog park.

It made me sick to my stomach. No one has been charged in those incidents. Two other dogs died. I hope they do catch the person or persons that did this and charge them. Animal cruelty is a felony in my state.

Oh Random Gemini I'm so sorry. Losing a beloved furbaby in such a horrible way is gut wrenching.. It's a felony here too but our animal control won't investigate but break the 4 pet law and they'll confiscate your furbabies and fine you 100 dollars for everyone over 4, even if you take very good care of them. 80% of felines are euthanized. There's a difference between an animal hoarder and an animal lover. It would sure save a lot of felines from death if we feline lovers could have more then 4.

What is wrong with people?? Meatballs with rat poison?? I'd love to force feed those same meatballs into that wretched human being. One less person society has to worry about protecting themselves from. I feel so overwhelmed with anger and sickness when I hear these stories.

JFED you and all of us ask that all the time! Thank You for helping this defenseless furbaby and that's exactly what they are. Defenseless!!! You are exactly what this world needs, more heroes! Someone needs to rescue when some piece of (you know) does the unthinkable.

There was a woman on my street who had 2 female felines. When they would get pregnant she would kick the babies out the minute they stopped nursing. I'm sure that's how they came to living under my house. She moved and so now there's only one stray living under my house.

My son knew her daughters. She also had a Lab, named Pepper. I asked my son, what happened to Pepper? I wish I never asked. He told me that she drove on the Hwy and just dumped her. This has haumted me and since I found out 6 months later there was nothing that could be done.

On the news they mentioned about a dog pack a few miles away and that one of the dogs was a Lab. I wondered if it was Pepper. The ranchers will shoot them to protect their livestock.

The human race is a cruel one but when I read about people like you, I know not all are! Again bless you!!!

Right back at you, JodieThierry! Thank you for being such a caring and nurturing animal lover, I'm sorry to hear that such incompetent people and rules are getting in your way of doing the right thing. It's just not justifiable.

Poor Pepper!! That lady on your street is just a wretched woman. I believe that there is a special place in Hell for all of these people we speak of...

Thank you. I'm not sure I'll ever get over losing him like that, it's the kind of thing I wouldn't wish on someone I hated.

Remind me not to move to Colorado. I have three dogs, a cat and two budgies. Our law here is a little more generous. You're allowed to have up to 5 animals of each type, and can apply for a kennel license which will allow you to keep more.

Well done, all who rescue abandoned and sick animals. It is a world wide problem, dumping pets. I live in rural France, in a tiny hamlet of 8 houses in a forest, and we get a constant stream of people who come out here at the weekend from the city and leave their animals to fend for themselves. Since I came here 7 years ago my family of cats has increased from 5 to 11, all of them just left here. The last one arrived in January, having been thrown over my neighbour's garden fence for her dogs to play with! Fortunately she found it in time and brought it to me. And the shelters will not take them any more, there are so many. So I am way over a comfortable limit of numbers but I am not going to give them up just to be killed. When I found a little Shi Tzu dog wandering in the forest in a terrible state, I was able to find him a home, but no one wants kittens or cats. I really do hate people sometimes.

Hi JFED

Oh yes,  I can empathize, see post for "Little Ginger" (now named Ellie) who I rescued from abusive neighbors who left her outside in freezing temps with a dreadful upper respiratory infection and maybe asthma, because they couldn't be bothered to care for her.  I can understand if people cannot afford proper vet care (it's expensive, yes) but as you say, at least let someone know the situation instead of just abandoning responsibility. Some, like your Hazel, get lucky because someone like you steps in and does the right thing, but how many do not?  Ellie's "people" never ask about her, and yet they still have the old cat shelter out there and some old food cans, like they expect her to come back to them?  Well maybe she will visit them in the spring, but guess who will be paying her vet bills for ongoing care and getting her spayed, not them!  People!

Sorry, that's a bit of reciprocating rant, but on the same wavelength.  I don't know how they sleep at night either. But I do!

Ugh, I don't know how people can do that to animals. I could never get rid of any of my animals - when I take a pet in, I make a promise to them that I will do anything in my power to make their lives good and will stick by them until one of us dies. And I don't break my promises. The most recent cats I took in, Mama and her two (remaining) kittens, were abandoned pets. The previous owners of Mama must've bought her as a kitten on a whim, and then as soon as she wasn't cute anymore or became an inconvenience, they kicked her outside and stopped caring at all. She wasn't spayed, so of course she got pregnant, and when her kittens were a couple of weeks old the 'owners' stopped feeding her entirely. Two of her kittens died, one of them was hit by a car, the other must have died of sickness that would've been prevented if they'd been getting any veterinary attention or even just adequate food. These kittens were 6 weeks old when they died. They shouldn't have even been outside!

Both of the remaining kittens have homes now. I'm keeping Mama, and I've spent a small fortune on her so far, with more to come in the future as soon as I can afford it. She wasn't in the best of shape when I took her in - pregnant with another litter (I spayed+aborted), crawling with fleas and probably worms (she's been treated for all that), I assume unvaccinated (she's being tested for nasties and vaccinated this week), a hernia in her side from being so tiny and having her first litter too young (this is the very expensive one, luckily it doesn't require immediate attention so I have time to save up for it), and if she hadn't been pregnant she would have weighed less than 3kgs when I took her in (even pregnant she was barely past 3 kg). We're not living far away from the people I *ahem* liberated her from, so I have bought her a beautiful collar with a fancy tag so if they ever do see her again, they'll know that she with someone who loves her and is giving her the life she deserves now.

Thank you for taking in Hazel, and thanks to everyone who takes in 'second-hand' cats that need responsible and loving homes. Especially the ones who have problems, like Hazel's need for insulin or the declawed kitties that were mentioned above; the ones that truly can't make it on their own and need human care, and by virtue of that are the least likely to get it. These animals need people like you, people who are able to give them the kindness they deserve.
