Hi all

we took our six month old kitten Pepper to the vets 2 days ago as he had a UTI, he was given an antibiotic injection that lasts 48 hours and we were given 10 clavaseptin antibiotic tablets to start tomorrow morning, the UTI hasnt come back and went as soon as he was given the antibiotic injection, so what i want to know is should we still give him the antibiotic tablets or wait to see if the UTI comes back before giving him them. reason I ask is Pepper is an intersex cat, he has a vulva, a penis, testicles and an anus, which are conjoined (there is no gap between the anus and genitals and any bacteria there could be the cause for the UTI) and he has been ill with diarrhea twice previous to this UTI, and has been on two lots of antibiotics for those two separate illnesses periods and has been ill practically every two weeks this past month, so am really reluctant to give him these antibiotics unless absolutely necessary, because three times in one month is bad and he is only 6 months old. What does everyone here think I should do? Thank you all in advance :)

I would ask your vet. What was the antibiotic shot that was already given? With most antibiotics, it is important to finish the full course. I can understand your concern about giving unnecessary antibiotics given his history, but the vet should really make this determination.

I would be open about your concerns which are valid. Oh, and I have to ask if an urinalysis was done and if bacteria were identified? Some vets like to throw antibiotics at all urinary tract issues without any evidence of bacteria. :(

No there was no urine test done she was more in awe of his rear end as she had never seen anything like it before lol, but we were warned about him getting frequent UTI;s when we adopted him from our local cat shelter because of the issues with his deformity, the vet said it is likely that the bacteria is just external rather than internal and making him feel like he wants to pee all the time, he was doing tiny ones every 2 minutes in the tray, it came from nowhere and seemed to vanish as soon as he was given the antibiotic even though she said it would take a while to work, she examined him and said there was no blockage there either, or much swelling to the bladder.

I would continue with the antibiotic tablets.  You can give him a probiotic just not at the same time as the antibiotic, so if you give the tablet twice a day give the probiotic in between the doses.  I have 2 kitties who have had UTI's recently and both of them didn't go away with one course of antibiotics, UTI's can be tricky that way sometimes.
