Hi. Wondering if anyone might have any experience with this. I will be taking him to the vet and I know nobody can diagnose him, but wanted to discuss to get some ideas.

This is about my almost 1 year old white/grey spotted tabby boy, Meiko. He has coined the nickname "horse" with my family in law as he's quite tall and well, he walks a bit like a horse. He walks pretty normal but sort of "plods" with his back legs most of the time. He's very smart and playful.

The first episode, we took him to Emergency vet care at 4am because he was acting and walking very "drunk" for lack of a better description. They decided he must have sprained himself, most likely his back, as he flinched when pressure was applied to his lower back, Dexamethasone seemed to work. That was back in December and he's been fine since. In this last week it's happened for about, a minute or less, two times. Today being the latest, and he wouldn't put weight on his back right leg for no reason. The last 2 times it's specifically noticeable in the back legs, not his overall balance like the first time.

Can't tell if there's a pattern in what he eats and when it happens or anything environmental. This morning he ate Tiki Cat Ahi Tuna, not a minute later he was stumbling a bit as above.

He seems confused when it happens too. The balance becomes like a toddler who has just learned to walk.

I'm careful with the food he gets, not much dry food (Inova, Solid Gold, Wellness). Wet food is primarily Evo, Wellness CORE Kitten, Nature's Variety (Chicken, Lamb), By Nature (Ocean Fish) and some TikiCat (non Dicalcium Phosphate). Occasionally chicken liver, too (lightly cooked) and cooked chicken, with very occasional raw.  Bravo Balance burgers occasionally.  He also gets sardines once every, say, 2 weeks. Grandma Lucy's Chicken Liver (dehydrated) and Nordic Natural's Omega 3 oil occasionally (1-2 drops in wet food).

Given that, I'm a bit confused as to why this sort of thing is happening as I try to keep him healthy. Am I overdoing something?

When he was a kitten I was silly and gave him a lot of Petite Cuisine Fish which upon further investigation has Menadione (sp?) so that's also a consideration, or maybe it's not relevant. Another thing I've read might suggest Diabetes. Seems unlikely for his age and health though.

I'm just worried he may have a tumour or neurological problem. :{

I appreciate any help you can give me and this little angel.

Thank you

I'm so sorry you're going through this.  I know from personal experience that it's really hard trying not to worry and think the worst.

We experienced something similar awhile back with a stray kitten we named Fable.  Around 2 years of age he began acting like he was drunk.  The first thing the vet did was put him on antibiotics which didn't help him.  It wasn't until he started taking steroids that he stopped falling over. I think the vet said he had vestibular disease.  Unfortunately, it left him with a permanent head tilt.  My boyfriend says he reminds him of Stewie on Family Guy, lol.  It's weird because Fable's personality also permanently changed.  It was like he regressed back to the young kitten stage where he was always super rambunctious.  Even today, he doesn't like being held or pet.  All he wants to do is play, play, and play.

In regards to Meiko, there are a lot of things that could be causing his symptoms (such as an ear infection) and it might just be a simple fix. I also know that hyperkalemia (low potassium levels) could also cause rear leg weakness.  Also, maybe seizures could cause these symptoms?  I'm sorry I don't have more knowledge on this subject. I think I used the site http://cats.about.com/od/neurologicaldisorders/ to look up stuff about neurological conditions when Fable was sick.

I hope your cat gets better soon!  Be sure to update if you can :)

please make sure he is drinking enough water and get him to a vet-it could be fip or a number of less deadly but still serious issues

Thank you both  :}

*Update* -  Hopefully it helps someone else as well.

Vet says it can't be FIP as there would be a number of symptoms and they'd not come and go like this. He said from how we describe the infrequency, duration and everything else about these little events Meiko has, he would diagnose it as an ultra mild form of Epilepsy. It might explain why he looked so confused each time it happened. Anything else would not be so intermittent.

He didn't recommend a blood test as he says it would not reveal much if it is Epilepsy then it's too mild form for medication, as that alone can cause liver problems and requires frequent blood testing. I'm not a fan of that idea.

My brother had epilepsy in the form of Aura seizures and he felt a numbness in one arm so I suppose in Meiko's case it's one or more legs affected.

I'm going to keep a close eye on him as I'm with him most of the day. If it becomes frequent or happens worse next time I will insist on testing but other than when it happened, he's perfectly healthy and has no other problems.

Hopefully it never happens again.

Thanks for updating!  I was wondering how everything went.  I'm so relieved he wasn't diagnosed with FIP.  Plus, the fact that he is otherwise healthy is awesome.

very confusing(to me)...if you bring him in again ask what his bp is...if it is too low (anemia?)...maybe putting his head down to eat makes him dizzy?
