I've noticed a lot of interesting tails on the feral cats I feed. I think the gene that causes the short tail in Japanese Bob Tails must be quite common around here.

Here are a few pictures.

Grandma Fu had a very short tail that she passed on to a lot of her kittens and grand kittens.

Jiro has his Grandma's tail.

But his brother Hiro has a long thick tail like a fox.

Twinkle and her sister Carpet both have short fluffy tails.

But the third sister, Chicken, curled up here next to Carpet, has a long fluffy one.

Cousin Heidi has a little corkscrew tail that always faces down

There are lots more weird and wonderful tails on the feral cats outside, I'll try and post some more photo's soon.

Anyone else have a cat with an interesting tail?

I bet you're right! It just takes one cat with a funky tail to spread that gene around the population, and it probably doesn't do them any harm--might even be a beneficial trait, since tails can get grabbed or caught in things, while at the same time a feral cat's ability to hide has become more important than a feral's ability to balance. I wonder if it was a proper Bobtail, or just a cat with a gene for a weird tail?

They're cuties, though! And such close-up photos--they must trust you a good deal. Are these the ones you adopted?

I think Tippi's tail is interesting with its lovely Tortoiseshell colours and tabby rings. It's the main thing people comment on when they meet her .

Tippi is a beauty. I've seen her photo on other threads and thought how pretty she was.

I have two tortoiseshell girls that have rings of colour on their tails, but Tippi's marking are really clearly defined. You're lucky to have her.

Yes, Hiro and Merlin could be brother's couldn't they? I love Hiro, he's such an affectionate , chilled out cat.

The three cats I have with long fluffy tails like this seem to be very proud of them. They walk around with their tails in the air all the time. The way the long fur moves kind of remind me of a peacock's tail. I'd be one very proud kitty if I had a tail like that.

Bobby's bobtail. It is so adorable the way he wiggles his cute little nub around. It seems to me that he wiggles his little nub much more than the other cats move their full-length tails. Whether his is from gene or injury, who knows? When he and Baby George, who is small but has a full-length tail, chase each other throughout the house, up and down the stairs, running as fast as their short legs can carry them, it's interesting to observe how Baby George uses his tail and is able to manipulate turns and corners more easily than Bobby.

Jiro is like that too. He hurtles around the house like a little furry canon ball. He seems to crash into things a lot more than his long tailed brother does. I think bob-tailed cats have more trouble balancing than long tailed cats do.
