Hello,

I have a 12 year old male cat, and he is my first cat. He appears healthy he eats and drinks normally. Although drinks a lot more lately. And urinates more as well. My main concern is a a sudden weight loss. I have been doing some research and his symptoms match up with hyperthyroid condition. Occasional vomiting, although he has always been a cat that vomits hairballs and such. He had fleas over the summer and he lost a bit of his coat towards the rear and it became coarse, I thought it was from all the licking from fleas but It has not gotten a lot better. I am very worried because he has gotten thin in his rear haunches and he was always a plump cat. I am very worried and will be making a vet appointment this week. I basically am scared I could lose my friend. Any advice appreciated.

Unexpected weight loss in cats, like in humans can be from a variety of reasons and by itself doesn't point to a specific diagnosis, but it is definitely an area of medical concern.  Other conditions that can be associated with weight loss include but aren't limited to diabetes, kidney function (loss) Inflammatory bowel disease and even cancer. Your cat definitely needs a vet and while it may be hard not to worry, many of the things caused by weight loss can be managed or reversed.   Hopefully the weight loss will be explained by something relatively minor, but he does need a vet as soon as they can give you an appointment.
