I noticed this morning that my 1.5 year old female cat, Stella, was having trouble urinating.  She kept going to her box, little or nothing would come out, and she'd scratch around at her litter, lick her rear end, and resume her normal activities.  A little while later, she'd return to the box and repeat the process.  Thankfully, I was able to get her in to our vet clinic very shortly after because I have heard enough horror stories to be quite fearful of such issues.  Vet felt her and tried to get urine out, but said that her bladder was empty.  The vet said that it's possible that she's uncomfortable urinating, so she's only going a little bit at a time.  It's also possible that she peed a more significant amount when I wasn't looking before we left.  Either way, I left her there for them to take a sample and perform an urinalysis.

Vet called me later in the afternoon, and confirmed that she has a mild infection.  She administered a Convenia antibiotics shot to help with the infection, but after doing some reading I'm somewhat nervous about the side effects of the drug :(  Wish I would have looked into it before it was administered.  She said to keep monitoring her litter box habits and urine output to make sure that things improve, and if not to bring her back in.

So, what else should I do for her?  She's eating an all canned diet, mostly grain free.

Since it is an infection, the antibiotic should do the trick. It would have been better to do a culture & sensitivity before antibiotics were administered to identify the specific bacteria and the most effective antibiotic to use, but at this point, all you can do is wait and see if the Convenia works. I would add a little extra water to her canned food to keep her system flushed out.

My cat had a UTI and was given Convenia. At the time I didn't know about the drug either so I let them give it to him. Sigh.

I mix warm water in with the canned food. Also try Feliway for stress because stress causes UTIs.

They also make food specifically formulated for urinary health, sorry I can't remember which brands offer that off the top of my head.  All cats are different but mine didn't have any more urinary infections after switching his food.

There's prescription urinary food like Royal Canin Urinary SO which is what I use. Science Diet makes one too.

ETA I should mention the food is for treating his crystals not infections, like LDG has said.

The urinary health formulas specifically address crystals and will do nothing for a bacterial infection.

Oops, my bad, sorry about that!  I mixed those two up.  I need some sleep.

Thanks guys, mainly I think I'm looking for how to prevent this from happening again!  Unless it was a random event, I don't know what caused the infection and I don't want it to become a recurring thing!

This website is a lifesaver for me and my cats: http://catinfo.org/?link=urinarytracthealth It talks a lot about what you can do to prevent problems as well as the cons of the prescription diets.  I have 3 cats who have issues with bladder infections.  I switched to canned food only 4 years ago and have only had 2 problems in my cats since.  1 is my kibble addict cat who refuses to eat canned and another is my idiopathic cystitis kitty.

Thanks for the site.  I gave it a quick lookover yesterday, but I'm going to give it a more thorough look when I get awhile!
