On the way home there was a cow walking down the road with a line of cars behind him trying to pass. He was actually staying in the correct lane (moving pretty fast - for a cow) and headed towards town
. My father said that when he saw him he yelled out his window "Going my way?" (he saw the cow too). Of course that isn't the first time I've seen a cow in the highway - but it's sure the first time I saw one actually obeying the traffic laws!

Yup, only in the country! That's funny!! I hope his owner found him and stuck him back in his proper field!! Cows get loose across the street all the time and we try to shoo them back in or call the owner.

(from a city-raised girl now living in the country)

Yup, I miss it (grew up weekends and summers on my grandparents dairy farm) Hate living in the 'burbs. Only thing I could never take was the smell of pig dung...now that is nasty!

Georgiagirl, when you said "obeying traffic laws" & "on the highway", how fast was the cow ACTUALLY going?

I don't exactly live in the country, I live in a small town in a rural area. We definitely get our share of those fresh country smells here!

BTW, Sherral, does that include the smell of a freshly run over.......whoops!..........never mind!!!!

When I was married to my first husband we lived out in the country across the road from a fairly sizable dairy farm. One day my children and I woke up to the sounds of a man shouting in our front yard. Armed with my cordless phone I peeked out the window to find our neighborhood farmer chasing an escaped cow around my front yard! The girls were 3 and under at the time and thought this was fantastic. His reinforcements arrived and they chased Bossy back across the road through the hole she had escaped through. The guy was apologizing very nicely when my eldest noticed that her sidewalk chalk had been nibbled on(I think it was a raccoon that actually got into it). She LOVED her sidewalk chalk and started crying "Mommy, the mean cow ate my chalkkkkk!" Poor guy was just speechless...I think he actually thought his cow ate it for a second. LOL

The town north of me (called Peculiar for a reason) has an annual "cow-plop bingo" game. They grid out a field and who ever bought the square where the first cow laid his plop wins the game.

Is that funny or what?

do you find livestock wandering the streets of small towns.

I only live a couple of blocks from where I work. I was walking to work in the dark this morning when I heard "moo...moo...moo...," it sounded like it was close by, and it was kind of scary because I didn't know exactly where the cow (or bull) was. So I was going to run the rest of the way, but then I figured I would end up tripping over something I couldn't see so I just kept walking...
