Hi I got my kitten about 4 weeks ago. She was eating purina kitten and purina indoor cat dry and Sheba wet. She had loose poop but the breeder said that was normal when changing environments. I got her off the purina onto Wellness kitten dry and fancy feast kitten(turkey). When I still had her on mix of the dry food ... Her poop got a little better. When I had her on all Wellness she got diarrhea.
I also tried Wellness kitten and blue buffalo kitten canned food with disastrous results!
I took her off the Wellness dry and added pumpkin to the FF kitten and it got better... Pudding ish but better.
I gave her one can without pumpkin and diarrhea was back.

So now I got rid of everything and she is eating boiled chicken, pumpkin and a little rice. She had a normal poop ( soft but formed) yesterday. Now today.. No poop!!

My question is how long to feed her the chicken ( I cut out rice now) and pumpkin?

I want to transition her to Tilki ... How much of that should she eat?

I usually feed her several times a day. She goes to her bowl when she is hungry.

She was dewormed twice and had her stool checked at vet. Since I have seen results with dietary changes... I'm thinking that's the route to go.

Thanks :)

What i did was mix a little bit of chicken with the new canned food.  Upping the amount of canned and decreasing the amount of chicken every other day. How old is she? I had trouble giving him to much gave him stoft stool. I had to give him more slowly and give multiple meals per day. How many times are you feeding now? Kitten need about 3 or 4 meals per day.

Oh Try feeding grain free food. Thats what we changed too, with good results. Cats dont need grains in their diet.

She is 3 1/2 months old. I gave her a little bit of weruva truluxe which is grain free and carregeenan free. They didnt have the Tikki chicken. I did mix just a little in her food. She hasn't pooped yet today so I'm a little worried about that! From one extreme to the other. I'm hoping the little bit of change from just chicken and pumpkin will help her go. I feed her way more than 4 times a day but only small amounts.

Thanks for your suggestions

I'm no expert on kitten/cat food. What I can say is that Science Diet Kitten Original, works great on solidifying kitten stool. I've taken in, babysat, rescued, many kittens, I'd say 20+, that have had loose stool. Within days on eating Science Diet Kitten Original, their stool was SOLID, which was GREAT! I do know that the ingredients AREN'T the best, but we do have to remember that these cats have now been domesticated for a VERY long time now and have somewhat adjusted to these kinds of bad ingredients like CORN. I do however recommend, this contradicts my previous sentence, that you do eventually stick with better foods like the one your using which would be Wellness. With my own 3 young cats, I started them off with Wellness, and their stool wasn't great which is why I switched to Science Diet Kitten Original, and it did wonders as I said previously. Now my young cats are hitting about 5 months old, I have switched to a brand by the name of Merrick, which you can purchase at Petco. (Of course, I slowly mixed in the new food to the old)

I think the reasoning, FROM MY EXPERIENCE of many cats/kittens, that foods like WELLNESS,BLUE, or even EVO, give younger kittens/cats loose stool is because these brands of foods are richer in ingredients compared to foods like IAMS and Science Diet. So really, you do have to find the right kind of food. Some cats/kittens do better on Science Diet, and others on Wellness. Getting your pet vet checks is always a good way to go, to make sure your pet is doing fine!

Thanks! It's good to see that even though you might have to start a kitten on a food that's not "great" , you can transition them to a better food as their bodies mature and can handle the higher quality foods. I tried Weruva last night and today ( mixing with FF kitten) and she threw it up today. Loved it but got sick. I may try FF classic line for now and see how she does. I think the milk in the kitten food is giving her loose stools but she likes the FF and doesn't throw it up. I will look into science diet too.

Aww, I always get saddened or even frightened at times when I see a cat/kitten throwing up. I hope it gets better in time for you and your cute feline!

And yes do be careful when giving milk products, generally because felines are lactose intolerant. I usually stray away from treats or foods, even wet, that contain some sort of dairy in it, as it always became a SMELLY situation for me till I did more research and have stopped since.

I wish you both the best of luck on FF , great to hear that it's progressing better

Read over the foods that have made her sick and see if there is a common ingredient. She may have a food intolerance.

Thanks. For now I'm mixing the FF with a little Weruva and pumpkin and she is tolerating the mixture. I dont want to keep switching her food. I have also given smaller amounts and very frequent meals.

I got my kitten 4 months ago, and I was also really confused about how to feed him.

First of all, make sure any food you get (dry or wet) are grain-free! Also, the less fish the better.

Second of all, kittens grow fast. My philosophy is that he should eat as much as he can.

Every cat is different, but I know my cat won't overeat because no matter how much he loves something, he will stop when he's full (even if the plate is not). I leave dry food out for him to graze, just in case he gets hungry during the day. And I give him wet food twice a day (3 oz. total). I would feed him a lot more wet food, but his stool tends to get too soft if I make the transition too fast.

So you should always have dry food out, and feed him as much wet food as he can eat in one sitting.

Thanks. No fish and no grains in FF classic turkey and giblets and liver and chicken. I don't want to give her dry food as it gave her diarrhea. Maybe when her system adjusts I will try adding a small amount of dry.
