My GFs husband's  birthday is this Saturday and we invited them to our house for dinner and to play cards afterward. I thought we'd do kind of Italian, so the menu is this:

Baked Ziti

Italian Pinwheel Rolls (the dough is rolled out, spread with softened butter mixed with chopped garlic, basil, marjoram, and parsley, then rolled up like sticky buns, sliced, placed into pans and baked)

Coleslaw with Broccoli and Cauliflower Florets

Hershey's Perfectly Chocolate Chocolate Cake with Whipped Peanut Butter Frosting (This has become her husband's favorite cake on earth. I'm thinking more along the lines of cupcakes, though, instead of one big cake as I can freeze cupcakes for later)

Whatever wine I find as we're going to the winery on Saturday morning

Later on, we're going to play cards, so I thought I'd make a couple of dips, maybe some Hawaiian Spinach Dip (to serve in a bread bowl with bread chunks) and I'm considering some guac (my love affair with guac has not yet abated). Or is that too much green with the spinach and the guac? Maybe some Vidalia Onion Cheese dip instead of the guac? I can throw together a small appy platter along with some tortilla chips to munch on while card playing. And, if the weather holds Friday night and it's not raining, dear Richard has requested some Almond Brittle (but only if it's not raining as I won't even try to boil sugar when it's raining/snowing). We usually play cards until midnight or so, sometimes later, so the guys will be hungry again.

That should be OK for a Saturday night dinner, even for a birthday. Or should I make it a little special? Not quite sure. (Although my GF says I could put pretty much anything on the table and he would scarf it down! They've been coming to our house now for years for his birthday dinner and he always seems happy with what I decide to make.....as long as that cake is there for dessert, he's a happy camper. He doesn't care about anything else.)

Thanks, guys! We had a great time! I did get to make the almond brittle (I had some almonds from Trader Joe's that I wanted to use up, so that's why I did the brittle). It was a gorgeous day, so I made the brittle first thing in the morning. I couldn't get the thin enough when I spread it out on the pan, but it was still good. I always give a brittle a good sprinkling of kosher salt because I like the salty-sweet taste of the candy.

After dinner, my GF and I went to my sister's as I was on cat duty this past weekend. I fed the cats twice a day and cleaned their litter boxes out while my sister and BIL were away. Took care of the furkids, then we came back and played cards until around 2:00 or so Sunday morning. We had a great time.

No, darn it!

I had the Hawaiian Spinach Salad, which is seriously good, BTW. And Rick asked me to make Rotel's Queso Dip, which is also seriously good. He eats it by large tablespoons.
