Hi all I'm new here, I'm Laura and I'm from the UK (I've noticed a few UK users when browsing through the site)

Ok so my story is I took in a stray a few weeks ago when I realised she was pregnant as at the time we were having really bad weather and the thought of her being cold & alone was too sad. I've had cats in the past but not since my eldest child (he's 13 now) was a toddler (divorce & house move forced me to rehome) back then the cats I had were spayed / neutered as soon as old enough so this is all new to me, I obviously don't know exactly how far along Daisy (my daughter named her) is so ill give you a bit of a timeline:
week before Xmas my son noticed a cat outside when he was putting rubbish out, he came in with a sob story oh it look hungry and lonely etc, I was going away the next day and had some cooked meat in the fridge that was still in date but would go off while we were away so I put some on a plate outside for the cat, came home day before Xmas and she was still hanging round outside, I blamed myself for having fed her so vowed to leave her alone so she'd go back where she came from, she had no collar but I was assuming she lived somewhere, anyway fast forward to first week in Jan she was still hanging round, darting inside if the door was left open for more than a moment and the kids were all nagging me to keep her, my compromise was buying some cat food and putting food out each day,
15th Jan I was in hospital for 2 nights and my parents stayed with the kids when I came home my mum said she thought the stray cat looked pregnant, I checked on her, picked her up stroked etc and decided that no she didn't seem pregnant to me, the weather was really cold and wet at this point so I was allowing her to come in to dry off if I saw her hanging round looking wet, about a week later I decided that actually maybe she was pregnant as she had seemed to have got a little fatter in that time and so by the end of January she was living with us.
Now from what I've read the earliest a cat looks pregnant is 4-5 weeks which to me means she is due literally any day now, her nipples are big and pink with bald patched around but a gentle squeeze shows no milk as of last night, she's become more affectionate in the last few days and this morning didn't eat much food and was sick a couple of times an hour or so after eating which I've read can possibly be a sign, can anyone tell me what else to look out for? Or at least reassure I'm not the only crazy nut spending day after day thinking oh this must definitely be the start of it now only for it not to be lol

Oh and here's a pic of her big belly

Hi and welcome! What a cutie- thanks for helping her!

Usually signs of ACTUAL labor (i.e. that it is actually in progress or going to be VERY) soon might include a discharge, increase in breathing rate, persistent licking of the stomach/vagina, and total loss of interest in food. The cat may yowl and pace.  Eventually she will start to intermittently squat and press down trying to expel the klttens.

Some signs that labor is close, but not in progress or about to be in progress near-immediately can be nesting behaviors, discharge from nipples, and either aloof or affectionate behavior to a degree that is greater than normal.

To me it sounds like she is probably close to labor but not actually yet in labor from what you describe. Keep monitoring her carefully though as loss of interest in food is definitely a sign to look out for.

Good luck! And you aren't crazy at all!! Let us know if we can be more help!

The exact hour is not easy to foresaw...  Its a waiting game, this!

A decent rule of thumb is you feel the kittens move from about 2 weeks before the delivery (sometimes a little earlier).

The last days, they do wander down into position, so you dont feel them as strongly - and they are also further down compared with before....

Some links about delivery further down!

continue with reports and questions!

Good luck!

Thank you both for replying and StefanZ for the links, I've done a lot of reading online over the last few weeks but will read through those articles as better to be prepared.
She has had some green discharge over the last few days as she's left patches on my bed (yuck thanks for that!) and is licking her vagina and belly a lot but not sure I'd say persistently, thing is with all of her behaviour I have no 'normal' to compare it to so it's hard to say if things like being more affectionate are a result of her settling in or signs of impending labour, all so confusing. Will keep you updated, I've decided to take her to our local PDSA vets clinic on Monday if she hasn't given birth by then just to be on the safe side

Oh green is not good at all...can you take her to the vet? Green means infection called pyometra . If not taken care of soon it could be fatal for her and babies.. Discharge should be whitish a little yellowish .. or if its the mucus plug it could be bloody or just transparent slobby mucus.

Please do take her in asap.
Let us know what happend pls.

Im not saying it is a uterine infection (pyometra) but its the most common when it comes to an infection on pregnant cats.

Like I said before please take her in..I cannot express how important it is and how quickly it can turn into a fatality for mom or kittens. I dont want to scare you but take her tomorrow pls.

I agree with HeavensKitty.  Green discharge doesnt sounds good.   A little green discharge may be OK, so feks the mucus plug may be a little greenish.  but being so several days it is something else.  If pus - not good.

Contact a vet asap.  Phone at least, the vet will know what follow up questions to give.  But vet visit probably necessary.

Good luck!

ps.   The first the vet will ask about is her temp.  You can measure in her armpit, say foreleg armpit, its easier than in the behind. Pretend it is a new game you play.   The temp in the armpit is somewhat lower, about 3 Fahrenheit degrees lower than in the behind, ie about 99, and a full Celsius grade, ie about 37 or just above.

If it is much higher than this - she is running a fever.

If it is noticeably lower - she is either before eminent delivery - or weakened, or chilled down...

I was typing as @StefanZ  was posting and I also agree.  The kind of discharge I was speaking of would be a one time thing at the beginning of labor (almost like water breaking in a human) and be slighlty bloody if anything, not green.  Please do contact a vet ASAP, tomorrow if at all possible.

Oh ok, can't get to vets today but will take her in tomorrow, the green was just one occasion and it was a dried patch I found on my bed but as she's not got any discharge from nose, eyes or mouth etc I'm assuming it was vaginal discharge, other times its just been damp patches, she seems totally fine in herself and is back to eating normal today, normal poos and wees etc. the only thermometer I have is an in ear one I use for the kids which will be no good, will try and get to a chemist this afternoon to get a normal one and check her temp. So glad I came on this site now as I'd be devastated if anything happened to her or the kittens even though she's not been with us long I'm already very attached

You can prob use the ear termometer too, but you must know what it will show on a cat... Comparing to the behind, or armpit.

Will prob be lower in the ear, as it is lower in the armpit too...

In any case, you can see changes, so start to measure her temp now, so you have a point of comparison.

Otherwise, your latest post seems much calming....   :)     If it is so as in the latest post, it is probably OK.

The mucose plug can sometimes go off several days earlier... It is not always going shortly before the labor.

And it is often greenish as said.

But it is always better to err and be too safe, than be unsafe...  "The guarded is protected by Our Lord" as the proverb says.

So make the vet check up anyways.

Good luck!

She's just left another small damp patch where she was sitting and it's completely clear, like I said I'd been planning on a vet visit Monday anyway so I'll just bring it forward to tomorrow, her belly seems to have dropped a little today so who knows we may get little kitty's overnight (though I've been thinking that for a week for various reasons lol) thank you again for taking the time to reassure and advise me

Well Daisy's temperature has dropped from around 38.1 - 38.6 and is now 37.3, also a gentle squeeze of one nipple brought a small amount of pale liquid so I'm hoping she'll finally give birth within the next 48 hours

Here's miss fatty looking huge

Oh, I hope so!
I don't think I can really rely on temperatures with Lilith anymore..her temps have been 37.3 for a couple of days, now. But no other signs!
