I have fostered young orphaned kittens  for a number of years now.I get then from possibly 2 weeks old and they leave here when they are 10 weeks old approximatley. I am now dating a new guy who has a cat wiht  FIV and i am wondering the implications of this.

My cats have never been tested for it, and from what i have read its only passed through deep biite woulnds. But I am wondering about the kittens who have no immune system. I know its still early but i cant help thinking of oif we move in with each other. we wont have room for many fosters but i love doing it and hope to cointinue. does anyone have any advice they can give me.

I see no problem at all, that is assuming he is a neutered male.

True, FIV is transferred through deep blood contact bites, and kittens are no more at risk than adults are, since a cats immune system development has no real relation to whether or not a cat will become infected or not.

If a positive cat deeply bites a kitten, the kitten will likely get it, if he bites an adult cat, the adult cat will likely get it.

So no worries there.

I know and have known many, many people with multiple cats including one or even 2 positive cats, and they live normal lives, and the others haven't contracted it.

It is mostly transferred by un-neutered male cats, in their vicious fighting, or less often during mating, as they bite down on the females neck to hold her there, and sometimes get carried away and bite too hard.

Thanks a lot for that. I did some research but was unsure about it. My next biggest issue is that all my cats carry the upper respiratory bug. They are all fine now but would worry about the fiv cay picking it up

Yes, that is a concern, just be sure he is up to date on his fvrcp, which he should anyway to help protect his more prone system.
