One of my cats has been making a disturbing yowling sound over the weekend.  Wandering round the house and crying for minutes on end.  There was a litterbox accident behind the sofa on Sunday and another today during the day - I have assumed that these are Moeka as she is behaving strangely.  I took her to the vet after work today and he said that it is possible that it is a UTI due to the crying and licking at her back end.  He gave me a medicine to give to her for the rest of the week and get back in contact at the end of the week to let him know how she is getting on.  He gave me something called Meloxidyl which I assumed would be something to help a UTI but having looked it up on the internet (the instructions in the box are in lots of languages but not English) I have found that it is a painkiller.

Does anyone have any suggestions on anything else that I can do to help her?  I find the yowling very upsetting.

What I found on it is that it contains meloxicam, I guess that it is still widely used in Europe.  They have issued a black box warning here about it's use in cats.  It is an NSAID.  A cats liver can't metabolize NSAIDS so the kidneys have to do all the work.  There have been cases of acute kidney failure in cats from using meloxicam.   I have always heard of vets giving an antibiotic for a UTI along with another type of pain killer.

Does kitty eat wet food?  Plenty of water will help with flushing it out of her system.

I'm really surprised if your Vet suspected a UTI he didn't test her urine to make sure, then prescribe an antibiotic if that's what it is.

And a pain killer might help with pain, but it doesn't necessarily resolve the issue

He checked her temperature which was normal and said that her bladder was fine - not full.  I've to give her the Meloxidyl for 5 days and to call them on Friday morning and let them know if she is doing better.  If she isn't then they will give me some special litter so that they can get a urine sample to test.

She eats a mixture of wet and dry food - Applaws although I am thinking of switching brands as Moeka has just started to get dandruff although her sister is fine.

She is still eating normally and drinking and everything in the litter box looks normal but she is sleeping all curled up in a ball which is not like her and has these spells of wandering the house and yowling - it is so loud I can hear her from upstairs in my house through 2 closed doors.

I just want to make things better for her!

Request they draw the urine from her bladder with a syringe rather than trying the special litter.  Every single time I've tried to collect urine using that litter, the cat wouldn't pee in it.  However, I would suggest a 2nd vet for a 2nd opinion as this vet doesn't seem to want to get to the bottom of the issue and pretty much passed it off as a urinary infection.  Request a full blood panel to check for thyroid problems.
