We got Newton about a week and a half ago and the day after we got him we took him to the Vet to get a check up and they recommended we give him a vaccine (I can't remember which one, but she said it was a very common one used on indoor cats) along with a deworming. Later that night he had a high fever so we took him in they gave him some meds and everything seemed to be fine, but the next day he started only passing very runny almost purely liquid stool this has been going on for a few days and just tonight there was a little bit of blood in it along with (what I just noticed tonight) is a swollen rear end and hes now very sensitive about touching around his tail. We're taking him to the Vet this Teusday, but I want to know if anyone else has had this problem and what they did to fix it. I'm wary of vets because my last cat we spent 1000s on meds for little problems that did nothing and ended up clearing up with a simple food change.

Some extra info, the vet started him on FortiFlora and after 3 days we're not seeing much change at all just the addition of blood in one of his movements today. He's eating normally (as normal as I think at least for a kitten his age), drinking normally, and is very playful and energetic. He's only had 1 solid movement and that was before his visit to the vet, post vaccination has only liquid. Which leads me to believe it was either him changing food brand (to a more expensive brand based on the vets recommendation) or the vaccine.

How did you switch his food, abruptly or over a period of days?  What did you switch him from and what did you switch him too?  It could very well be the stress of the vet visit/vaccines causing his diarrhea.

Gradually changed it, switched to Royal Canin from Fancy Feast. I'm hoping it's just stress and not a deeper problem.

Is it canned food or dry?  IMHO Fancy Feast Classic are much better nutrition than Royal Canin.  Royal Canin has a lot of ingredients in it that cats do not need nor can they digest them such as corn and other carbohydrates.  Canned food is best for cats as they need moisture in the diet. Cats need a high protein low carb diet. If you haven't seen this site, I recommend you read it, it has a lot of great information on it: http://catinfo.org/

Don't stress on the fact of seeing blood in it, the red blood is telling you his intestinal tract is irritated now.

I'd imagine the shot was an fvrcp vax, which he needed, deworming, yes he does need as well.It is common for kittens to have coccidia, an intestinal parasite. This will cause runny, blood streaked at times, diarrhea.

Stinky too.

Vet will likely do a fecal float to diagnose.

That's what we're doing right now, taking him in tomorrow to hand in the fecal vial and he does stink quite a bit so I'll ask about that parasite. Thanks a lot.

Canned, he won't even touch his dry food since we gave him his first plate of canned. I'll definitely check that site out, thank you.

Perfect.

If he does test positive for coccidia, the standard med given by most vets is albon.

It works by inhibiting the growth of the cysts and eventually their own immune system gets rid of it.

Albon is slow acting, and may take a month or more.

Ask for ponazuril, it is excellent and fast. It does not inhibit, but actually kills the cysts. 5-7 days of this and he will be good as new.

Ponazuril is Marquis paste, diluted with water. 5 mls of Marquis (in case he is unsure, not sure if all vets know) to 12 mls of water.

Refridgerate.

This is def. the way to go if you have a choice :)

Good luck!
