Changing Feeding Schedule

Right now I split my feedings up as follows: 4 am 2 Tbsp dry, 8 am 2 Tbsp dry, 6 pm 1 can wet (approx. 3 oz. I switch brands so either a full 3 oz can or half of a 5.5 oz can). I live in a studio apartment and, although I really enjoyed being woken up around 4 am because my lovely 3 year-old was hungry or bored, I started splitting his 6 am 1/4 c. dry with an automatic feeder to alleviate the problem. He gets Taste of the Wild dry (although I'll be switching to Wellness Core at the end of this bag) and grain-free, or at least corn-free if it isn't grain-free, wet food, mainly Wellness, Blue Wilderness, Nature's Recipe, Soulistic (Petco Brand) and Simply Nourish (PetSmart) but I supplement Trader Joe's and 4Health to help cut down on cost about once a week.

About 3 weeks ago I started a night class at the university where I work and don't get home until almost 8:30 pm. Unfortunately since the way the class lines up with my work schedule I don't have time to come home to feed him so he's essentially going from around 8 am to after 8 pm with no food. He doesn't beg for food or scarf down what I put down when I do feed him but I still feel guilty, and don't particularly enjoy changing the schedule this much. My first thought was to flip feedings so he gets a can of wet in the morning and dry at night, then feed once at 6 am, but I tried that this morning and without fail at 4 am I had a cat sitting on my chest head butting me. My next idea is to switch to give 2 Tbsp. dry at 4 am, 1/2 can wet around 7 am (I leave for work a little after 7), 2 Tbsp dry at 4 pm and 1/2 can wet at 7 pm, and then once a week the feeding would be a little over an hour late instead of 2. My question here is, for a cat, how much of an overhaul would this diet change be? Should I be concerned about any health problems? He'll still be getting the same food but at a different times. Should I be worried about splitting feedings at night, as well? In the 6 months I've had him I haven't had any issues with diet for him but I gradually moved him from the feeding schedule at the shelter and then gradually started adding wet food over about a one month long period. Or, really, am I worrying too much? I don't know if I'm making this too complicated. What feeding schedule do others have?

I think you're worrying too much!  Some people feed twice a day, some feed three times, some free feed.  It's all over the board.   I'll bet there are some who only feed once a day,  although, personally, I think that might be a little too long for a cat to go unless those are free feeders who are filling the bowls up once a day

Since you've got an automatic feeder already, though, can't you make use of it not only for an early morning feeding, but for an evening feeding too?

BTW, I should point out that there really is a huge different between cans of Soulistic and Wellness, for example in calories and fat.  Soulistic is extremely low in both, and Wellness is fairly high.  So on the days you feed Soulistic, your little one may be more hungry than on the days you feed Wellness.

I agree, while not idea, 12 hours between meals is okay. That's my schedule due to work. Definitely use a timer if possible. Or hide some freeze dried treats or food -- give your cat some play time while you're away!

Thanks! I do try and keep up with calories I'm feeding him to try and stay about 200 calories a day (he's 10 lbs) so on days of lower calorie foods I try and give him some boiled chicken if I have some already cooked or another Tbsp or so of dry. For all the begging he does for my food sometimes, though, he never scarfs anything down on the first shot. He'll usually take about an hour to eat each meal, coming back occasionally, which I take as a sign he's never too hungry between meals.

What a great mommy you are!!! I wish every cat had a home like yours!!! What a lucky boy. :) I think if you bit another feeder, your troubles would be fixed. :)
