Hi All,

I have a 2.5 years old super sweet girl at home, her name is rice cake. She was tested to be FELV + early last year. After that she’s living happily with us without any sign of illness.

About two weeks ago, we noted that she’s losing appetite and she’s less active than before. Thus, on Feb 8th we brought her to the vet and had some regular exam + body function blood test. Hard to believe, but the result of blood work shows she cannot produce enough red blood cells anymore. Below is a snapshot of the blood work result (only including those that indicated low or not normal):

Urea Nitrogen: 13

RBC: 1.9

Hemoglobin: 3.8

Hematocrit: 11%

Lymphocytes: 888

Absolute Reticulocytes: 3,800

Although the result doesn’t look good at all, she is still doing okay in general and the report didn’t indicate any other sickness beside anemia. She’s still drinking/eating and following us around at home (climbing stairs, jumping up and down from our desks). Thus, we did a lot of research online in the next few days and found some possible treatments for her.

On Feb 12th, we gave her 60ml blood transfusion, a B12 injection and the first shot of LTCI (lymphocyte T-cell immunomodulator). This experimental drug is our last hope for Rice Cake at this stage. I heard that LTCI takes some time to start noticing effects, and it might not work for her either. After the blood transfusion, her HCT increased to 15 and she had her appetite back. Hope the transfusion could give her some more time for LTCI to show effects.

Since people here are very knowledgeable and had a lot of experiences, I am just wondering if there's  any  experiences on LTCI to share.

In addition, please let us know what are some other treatments we can try to comfort her and prolong her life.

Thank you in advance. Greatly appreciate.

I am so sorry that you and Rice Cake are going through this. It sounds like she is receiving the best care possible. I don't have any experience with anemia, but one of our members @LDG  does. Hopefully she can share her experience with you.

I, too, cannot share any experiences with LTCI....because I live up in canada, and unfortunately my vet never mentioned this drug when my young 2 yr old was going through this.  He was also extremely anemic but my vet only gave him antibiotics, pain meds and hydrating fluids.  Your vet sounds much more knowledgeable with this condition.

With the severe anemia, the only thing I noticed which was alarming, was that my cat began to eat his clumping, clay litter....so I switched it to a corn based litter....thinking this would atleast not be as dangerous if he ate it.  He also would lick the concrete floor in the basement.

He developed problems with eating, as though his teeth or gums severely hurt, so maybe just keep an eye on this.

The vet did say that certain cats were given L-lysine to improve their immune systems, but I think you give this when the cat is well??  I really do not know.

I am really rooting for your beautiful young cat, because the more information and treatments that are available for cats with Felv+    ( and Fiv+....i know this is not in your case), the better the outcomes in the future.

@nzpinky  ....you may already know about this yahoo support group, maybe they have other info, at yahoo groups for felv+,  https://groups.yahoo.com/neo/groups/felvsupport/info

Do they have your cat on an iron supplement?  We use LiquiTinic (Pet Tinic) at the vet hospital I work at.  It helps a lot with anemia.
