Hoping for some advice from you good folks.

I have a cat named Scooter. He’s 9 years old, and is an indoor cat.

For years I’ve always fed him EVO weight management dry cat food, which I’ve always understood to be a good food for cats. (It should be, considering the price.)

A few weeks ago I noticed he would throw up early in the morning. It became pretty frequent, as often as every other morning. It seemed to consist of mostly undigested cat food.

So I took him to the vet. He suggested I try another food. When I asked the vet if he considered it might be a food allergy he brushed it off. He thought most likely it was an issue with the EVO food. I know EVO had a recall about 6 months ago and I thought perhaps they were having issues again.

The pet store I frequent suggested I try using Premium Edge dry cat food. I bought the Hairball Management flavor. Well, Scooter won’t eat it. I tried for a couple of days but he simply won’t eat it.

Yesterday I returned to the store and bought Premium Edge Weight Management. I brought it home and gave it to Scooter and he immediately ate it. I thought, “Great, problem solved!”

Well, this morning I came downstairs to find that Scooter hand thrown up again. Same issue as before, it looks like undigested food.

So what I’m wondering (and hoping you folks can help me with).

* Is there an ingredient in weight management cat food that could be causing the problem?

* What other cat food brands/types should I try since weight management seems to be the only flavor my cat likes?

Appreciate any advice. Thank you.

Dana,

did you do blood work on your kitty? Some time ago our kitty started throwing up food on a regular basis. First it was food and I thought she was just eating too fast. Then she was throwing up liquid stuff almost daily. We tried many new brands of food but nothing really helped. She also became very picky about her food as well.  It turned out she had liver issues. She is on medication now and hasn't thrown up even once over the last 2 months. I hope in your case it's just food but please check the blood work as well, if you haven't done it yet.

Hi mak17f,

Thank you for your reply. The vet suggested that I have Scooter's teeth cleaned, as he has some plaque.

They did some bloodwork for that. I guess they need to make sure he can handle the anesthetic. I'm not sure if they tested for liver issues as well. I'll have to call them and see.

Thanks for the tip!

It's good he got bloodwork.  Vomiting can be from lots of different issues--hairballs, nervousness, allergies or any number of illnesses.  Best to see what the tests show before making any sudden changes in diet.

For me, I'd look at feeding your cat wet. Throwing up on dried food seems to be fairly common and before I'd pay out expensive vet bills, I'd try feeding wet food. It really may be a simple solution.

My cat, when he ate some dry, threw up often and always in the morning. Always! He got wet food in the day and I'd leave him a small bowl of dry if he got hungry during the night but if I wasn't up early enough in the morning, then he'd eat dry and throw up it up not too long after - I really think it swells in their tummies and the only way is out.  My partners cat was the same with dried food, esp in the morning.  I do not feed dry anymore after ours got sick with a UTI and I looked at the awful nutrition of dry food - even expensive brands. I occasionally feed our cat a few dried treats, but learned not to feed him too many because he' throw them up too.
