I adopted two Cornish Rexes from a kitten mill situation just before Christmas and I found out when I took them in to get fixed that the female was pregnant.  They were very stand-offish at first, which is not a Cornish Rex personality at all.  They didn't seem to understand being indoor cats and the male the first day at my house tried to jump through the glass window.  Long story short, they are now quite affectionate and follow me around like dogs.  She had her kittens 2 days ago (her water broke in my lap...kind of gross) and both yesterday and today I woke up with her and all four of the kittens under the covers next to me.  (Thankfully, I didn't accidentally kill one.)  I put them back in the crate (just a cat crate with the door removed and a nice soft blanket folded up for padding).  and went back to sleep and when I woke up again, they were next to me on the covers this time though.  I put the crate on the bed as a comprimise with her and she kept them in there for a while but when I got up this morning, they were, again, under the covers.  I'm terrified I'm going to hurt one with them being right next to me while I'm sleeping.  I got a large playpen that I locked her up in but she is not having it.  She ignores the babies and cries when I put them in there.  Any suggestions are welcome.

Maybe try providing a more attractive nest to her than the cat crate, like a large cardboard box with your covers, the one she likes. Or if you have a comfortable couch, give up your bed for a few weeks, lol.

I'll make her a new one tonight.  She never "nested".  She just jumped into my lap, walked in circles, layed down, and started having her babies.  I'm afraid she'd bring them onto the couch if I slept on it.  I'll probably have to shut her up in the guest room.  I just hate to do that because she is so social now.  I also considered shutting her up in the pen and put the pen next to my side of the bed.  She is a mama's girl.  It's kind of ridiculous.

How sweet..she knows you will not harm her babies and she knows thats the safest place..lol I would think the safest would be leaving her in guest room and cgeck up on her as many times as possible so she knows mom still loves her...

I understand your worry but I just have to say this is the sweetest, most adorable problem to have. It's amazing she trusts and loves you this much after such a short period of time :)

Good luck keeping the babies out of your bed!

I hope you got enough with good advices for now!

How is the male doing here?  Did you separate him from the rest, or is he around?  Helping out anything or?

If he is friendly, there is btw practically no danger from him, contrary to popular beliefs.  IF anything bad happens, it is accident, not attack.  (an unfriendly male MaY be a real danger for the kittens, that is true).

On the pic, they seem very cozy and friendly!   friendly toms is a blessing, and its good the kittens are from a friendly father.   Friendly studs / toms are a lot more important for the kittens psyche  than you would spontaneously think

You were with them to be fixed.  The mom werent obviously fixed than.

Was the male fixed?  Good.

I though, as he is friendly, there are no danger of him being around.  BUT there is a danger of him mating her again soon after delivery.  THAT is the danger with toms being around.

A problem is, they can make babies even  6 weeks after fixing.  One week after isnt uncommon, but you arent completely sure before several weeks after....

Good luck!

Dad's fixed!  I brought him in on Dec 22nd and he was neutered that week and she'll be spayed once she dries up from nursing these babies.  His name is Harpo and he is a doll!  He was licking Mama and just laying next to her throughout her labor.  They are ridiculously adorable.

I think mama and I have come to a compromise.  The guest room didn't work....LOTS of crying and baby-ignoring and feet under the door.  The pen next to the bed didn't work because the babies are so tiny they could get through the bars.  So, I got four pillows and arranged them in a square with kind of a valley in the middle on the bed and layed a nice, super soft blanket over top  and put the babies in the middle where they can crawl around but can't crawl out.  And when I go to sleep, I keep an arm in there with them and mama.  So today was the first day I woke up without a pile of kittens under my covers!  Not the most comfortable sleeping arrangement but mama still gets to stay on the bed next to me and I get to not accidentally kill kittens!  =)

The kitty in my avatar is Tobias, my first Rex. I adopted him when he was around 13 years old and he had a heart disorder. I didn't have him long, unfortunately, but I have been hooked on Rexes ever since. They have the most amazing personalities! It's as if someone crossed a monkey and a dog and put it in a cat suit. I love all cats but the Cornish Rexes are so special.
