Wondering, is it possible to treat your cat for roundworms or do you have to bring them to the vet?  I understand weight is important to know as that tells how much worm med the kitty will need?   What is the home has like 5 or 6 cats?  Would you give them all a dose?   Thanks........................whatever.

Hi,

Dewormer can be bought at your local pet store without a trip to the vet.  Follow directions on the bottle, treat everybody.  As for weight, weigh yourself on a scale without the cat and again with the cat. The difference will be the weight of the cat.

Thanks and the reason I ask is because my daughter has 6 cats, rescued type, oldest 15 and youngest a year or two.  One of them vomited a round worm and it was taken to the vet to confirm what it was.  They said she had to bring all cats in to be weighed and wormed.  A few did need rabies shots.   Her bill was $500.00.   I felt so bad and just think that amount could have been avoided.......so just wanted to ask opinions on this subject.   Thank you.....whatever

No problem, I know what she is going thru.  I have a total of 21 cats and kittens in my house at this moment and know that vet bills can be out of this world.  I know my vet will work with me by seeing one animal or two and giving me enough medicine for all of the animals.  With the wormer, you usually need more then one dose a few weeks a part for it to be effective.  I can understand if the cats needed yearly exams and vaccines before the vet would treat, but most vets are understanding about cost when it comes to so many cats.  For future info, tapeworms are the small rice looking pieces in the stools and are from fleas.  You can also get dewormer for these at your local pet store, walmart or online.  Shop around because it can be found cheaper on line.  It is always good to have some dewormer on hand so the cats can be treated sooner.  The reason to treat all the cats is because unless you see who threw up or pooped, its hard to tell sometimes which one did has the worms or is sick.
