I know it's said that kittens should be allowed to eat as much as they want, but I think mine might not have an "I'm full" switch!  My sweet little orphaned barn kitten Grace, who we estimate is now about 10 weeks old, is just like a dog for food.  She begs, tries to steal, fusses, and dances around for food.  She's eating lots of good grain free canned food (Wellness and Wellness Core) and gets three meals a day.  She's absolutely tiny but still eats more than my big boy kitty.  I've had many kittens, but have never seen one who loves food SO much!  She's unlike any kitten I've ever had...she scarfs down her food and looks for more.  Other kittens, including my lovely now 4 year old girls, never paid a whole lot of attention to food.

My concern here is just that she really may not know when to stop, and I don't want to feed her so much that she becomes ill.  Her little tummy just looks so big right after she eats!

Is this a valid concern?  Does anyone know the maximum amount of wet food that it is safe to give a kitten per meal?

FWIW, aside from her crazy appetite, she is absolutely healthy and normal.  She is in the midst of her kitten vet appointments (booster shots and such) and has been examined, dewormed, etc.

A 10 week old kitten will eat (on average) about TWICE as much as an adult cat, and will for at least several more months. It's not unheard of for the little ones to pack away 12 ounces or more of wet food each day! It is completely normal, and some days she'll want more than others. You're seeing the round belly, because although they need a ton of food each day at this young age, their little stomachs can only hold so much food at one time.  If at all possible with your schedule, I'd divide it up into 4 or 5 meals per day. Around 5 or 6 months you'll likely be able to cut it back to three meals.

I realize I didn't address your specific question. I'd probably aim for roughly 2 ounces of wet/canned at each meal. Assuming 4 or 5 meals, per day. Some days she may ask for a little more, and others she may not finish every meal. If her stomach still seems really bloated after eating, I'd go with 1 1/2 ounces, but definitely 5 meals per day at that amount.

Yep, twice as much as an adult sounds about right!  I was thinking it should be twice the amount my normal size cats eat though, rather than twice the amount my twice-as-big-boy eats!  LOL!  But who knows, maybe Grace will be a giant girl someday.  The farmer who found her and fed and watched her for a week before taking her in never saw a mom kitty.

I'll reduce the amount given to her at a time and will figure out a way to schedule more feeding times.

When my 4-year-olds were kittens they really could give a flip about food.  My previous group were kittens about 22 years ago and I don't recall them caring much about food either, but way back then I was feeding dry kitten food so that may have made an appetite difference too.  This little girl is every bit as much of a food hound as any dog I've ever met!  ;-)

Thanks much!  :-D

Yep, the amount is definitely startling if you're not expecting it.

My two kittens are a bit older than yours, but they still eat a fair amount.  One is a food hound like yours. She's 6 months old and has no problem still eating 10 ounces or more on a hungry day (once or twice a week, usually). She seems to be leveling off a little and averaging about 8 ounces most days, though.

Have fun with your little one!
