Better cat food vs. particular kitty

Hello! I have a cat that is two years old. I've always fed her canned food from the Dollar General. It's called Everpet, its really cheap food (3 cans for $1) and I want to get her eating something that has better ingredients in it. I've bought some foods for her that were higher quality (without the by-products) but she wasn't interested in them. I'm just wondering, should I change her food up if she loves the cheap by-product stuff so much? I just want my kitty to be happy and healthy. Thanks for reading!

Since it's feasible for you, I would suggest changing her food. She may be doing fine with it now, but it's as the years go by that her diet might start to impact her negatively. You could even mix what she is familiar with, in with the food you'd prefer her to eat. It might help convince her that it's yummy stuff. Start with a little bit of the new, with a lot of the old food. And increase the new food (and lower the old) a little bit every few days or so.

Maybe try Fancy Feast Classics.  It's not real expensive, not bad ingredient wise, and it's the only thing I could get my picky kitty to eat (and I tried most of the top of the line stuff).

Dollar store foods can be really bad. I can't find the ingredients of that particular brand right now though. Friskies pate is decent, but has enough by-products to tempt the picky kitties :tongue2:. Usually Friskies costs about 45-50 cents a 5.5-oz can. Fancy Feast is about the same as Friskies but has no rice (or other grains). But it is a lot more expensive, about 60 cents for a 3-oz can.

Friskies is a cheap but decent wet food. I feed it to my guys and they love it, and so does my wallet.

A 24 pack of 5.5 ounce cans is around $15 at walmart (a tiny bit cheaper than it is at the dollar store, since they sell friskies, too.) or Atleast it's cheaper at walmart here than the dollar store.

Also Fancy Feast is a good cheap food. But with Friskies you get more bang for your buck because they sell 5.5 ounce cans while fancy feast sells 3 ounce cans.

If you only have one cat Fancy Feast may work well for you. But I have 4 so I go for Friskies so I can get more for less. :)

Thanks for the reply. I'll pick up a can of Fancy Feast and see if she goes for it. I only have the one kitty, who weighs six pounds so doesn't consume a whole lot of food. Hopefully it will work for her!

I just checked online at Walmart and a 24 pack of 3 ounce cans of Fancy Feast Classics is just under $14 and a 12 pack is just under $7! :)

Please stop feeding your kitty that Dollar General crap. To me, it's scary enough that the only thing you can find online about Everpet are horror stories about recalls and sick/dead pets. You can't even find who manufactures the food...

If money is an issue, the 9 Lives and Friskies pate foods are pretty inexpensive. Granted the ingredients aren't going to be the greatest, but at least your buying food from a resourceful company. Last I checked, Target & Walmart sell them both in stores... 9 Lives was about 40 cents a 5.5oz can and the Friskies was 45 cents. Friskies also has 13oz cans for around $1.00.

If you can afford a little more, (like others have mentioned) Sheba and Fancy Feast Classics are pretty decent lower cost foods.

That's what has bothered me the most about Everpet, I have no idea who is making the food. I bought a few cans of Fancy Feast for her, so tonight I'll mix some in her regular food. Hopefully she will eat it.

Fancy Feast is a little more expensive than Friskies but if you look, there are coupons and sales. If you are willing to take larger cans of some of the "premium" foods, they can come out to about the same price as FF per ounce if you buy a case.  You do have to experiment and find something your cat really likes before doing that, though. Still, it is surprising how much you can save by going to a bigger can.

I've bought a lot of things at the Dollar Store but sometimes they actually charge more than other places. You are right to be concerned about the food, I think.

Well, tonight I gave Carmel a can of Fancy Feast to see if she would go for it, and she ate about half the can! I'm so glad she seems to like this, I just keep reading more and more bad stuff about Everpet.

They don't call it "kitty crack" for nothing :) So glad it worked out.  Chicken Feast Classic seems to be a well liked one.
