HELP!! Need some help with cat issue, possibly related to food switch?? We have 3 cats, one had a urinary blockage awhile ago and was recommended to be prescription food. We tried every brand none of which he would he for more than a few weeks (very picky cat). On a recent trip to the vet we explained that he completely refused to eat the prescription food. They suggested to just get a low magnesium food instead of the prescription food. I got that in dry food and started switching all 3 cats over to it because the other 2 have also had UTI's and other urinary issues in the past. After a week or so all 3 cats have peed somewhere in the house. Could this have anything to do with switching food?? We had this issue 6 months or so ago when i tried to switch food then just went back to their old food (thought it was just a coincidence though). But since it's happening again i'm thinking it must be related. I'm now definitely thinking of switching them all to completely canned food. Do you think this would help our problems? Any help would be appreciated!! Thanks!

Canned food is a much better choice for urinary issues, actually for all kitties than the dry food.  I would definitely get all of the kitties on a wet food.

If your cat had urinary crystals it is VITAL to get him on an all-wet food diet immediately!

As the previous posters said, definitely get everyone on board the canned food diet. It’ll help with the UTI and other issues greatly.

Agree with the above posters.  AND, it's already possible, since they are peeing outside the boxes, that they already have UTI's, because peeing outside the boxes is the first sign of trouble in that department
.  You should keep a very close eye on that

As far as canned food goes, I just found this a couple of weeks ago when I was checking out a new food for my kidney cat.  It's Dave's canned food, and now they actually make one with low magnesium.  One of my cats LOVES Daves canned food, so you might see if yours do.  Here's is a link to their website:  http://shop.davespetfood.com/product-p/6-85038-11401-3.htm

Another vote for wet food! Dry food dehydrates and also causes urine to go more alkaline. Wet food hydrates your kitties and helps flush out the urinary tract. Weruva, Tiki Cat, and Fussie Cat are supposed to be especially good for UTI kitties.

I've heard that amount of magnesium isn't as big a factor as once thought.

If you want feedback from the diet changes, you could test the urine with urine testing strips. You want a pH of about 6.5.

Definitely get them on an all canned food diet.  Dry food dehydrates them and is usually full of carbohydrates which can cause crystal formation.  I switched my cats to canned food 4 years ago and have had a lot less (1x in 4 years) incidence of bladder problems in my cats.  Granted I have one that is a canned food holdout that keeps getting infections as she will only eat dry but we are working on switching all my cats to raw.  have you see this site?  It is a great resource on bladder problems in cats.  http://catinfo.org/?link=urinarytracthealth
