I've noticed a number of threads on this forum where the process of changing a cat's food from one to the other requires a weaning period. I want to know why this is, and how to do it.
My 7-year-old cat, Prince, has mostly lived on PC brand dry cat food, and is currently eating Kirkland brand dry cat food.
I have purchased Acana Pacifica dry food and was wondering if I should have a weaning period to switch his diet, and I wanted to know if there's any specific way to do it. I plan on feeding him wet food as well, which he has never really been exposed to.
Thanks!

The reason for doing this with dry food is that some cats will get an upset stomach from changing too fast. If your cat doesn't get an upset tummy from sudden switches, don't worry about it! But if you do want to do it gradually, just mix a small amount of the new food into the old food, and slowly increase the amount of the new food until you've run out of the old food. There's no "right" way to do it; whatever works for your cat is best.

Most cats don't seem to have the same problem switching wet foods, so if you want to get a variety of flavors/brands that should be fine. If you need tips on getting a kibble addict to eat wet food, this article may be helpful:http://www.thecatsite.com/a/transit...-to-a-new-type-of-food-canned-raw-or-homemade

He was able to switch between PC and Kirkland pretty quickly. Mostly because his old living space had PC and we have Kirkland, (my house mates have cats), and he didn't have much trouble with it at all. Though, they're likely very similar in formulation.
I'll try your method above and see how it works out. He's eaten wet food a few times since he's been here and didn't have any change in bathroom routines so I think he'll be fine with it.
Thanks for your reply, and I'll keep posted.
