Hello, My Baby, Marinara, is with the Dr right now.  Dr feels he has a urinary blockage and is gonna cath him.  I have been reading about the benefits of canned foods.  What are good quality ones?  I live in a rural area.  No Pet Smarts or anything close to that unless I drive one hour to a larger city.  We do have a Walmart, Meijer, and Tractor Supply that sells pet foods. Does anyone have suggestions?

I have fed my bladder kitties cheaper brands such as Fancy Feast (classics only) Meow Mix (canned only), etc.  The key to the canned is any canned is better than the highest quailty dry as cats need moisture in the diet.  I have a water fountain and I  add additional water to may bladder kitties meals.  However recently (in the past 2 weeks) have switched 2 of my 3 bladder kitties over to a raw diet.  As it pretty much cured my chihuahua from having bladder issues.  This website has a lot of good information on it: http://catinfo.org/?link=urinarytracthealth  I have fed my cats canned food only for 4 years and have only had one flare up in my cat who has interstitial cystitis so I think we are doing pretty good.

Thanks.  Dr will be sending Marinara home with some Hills.  I did read about the importance of moisture in a cats diet.  I visited the link, Thanks :)  I have always been concerned with canned because of  possible dental issues.  Just gottta do what I gotta do :)

Dry food for cats doesn't clean their teeth any more than cereal does for you or I.  My 14 & 1/2 year old cat has the teeth of a kitten, literally has never had her teeth cleaned she ate dry up until the last 4 years.  My 7 year old just had to have hers cleaned after being on dry only her entire life (she refuses anything but).  My 4 year old is getting some tartar and she ate mostly dry for a long time.  It depends on the bacteria in their mouth and genetics.

I did so many hours and hours of research on the best foods to prevent urinary problems I nearly drove myself crazy.  And even after all that, and feeding several high end foods that by the ingredients and by the numbers should have been great for their urinary health, my boy cat still blocked and one of my girls didn't block but had enough crystals that she was having trouble peeing.  I was feeding mainly the canned foods, plus a couple of tablespoons of dry because they really like it.  I even mixed the canned food with water to up their fluid intake.  Apparently doing everything right "on paper" doesn't always work.

After the nightmare I went through with my boy, despite my hatred for Hills food (both OTC and Rx), he is going to stay on 6 days of c/d canned and 1 day of s/d canned per week permanently, per my vet's recommendations.  The girl who had issues but no actual blockage was on the same schedule as my boy, but now is back on non-Rx, good quality, grain free canned food 6 days a week, and s/d one day a week and is doing very well.

As far as where to get it, if you can't find the food you'd like to use locally, I'd highly suggest online ordering.  I've been doing that about half the time for a while now, at times when I just can't make it to the pet store.  I also find that online ordering is cheaper for many (but not all) of the foods in my rotation.  I use Wag.com if I've forgotten to order early enough and need something in a hurry, but their prices aren't as good as some others.  Chewy.com seems to be the price leader at the moment.  I only order from places with free shipping for canned food (some have free shipping that doesn't include food).  For the Rx food I get it from my vet because not only is it significantly cheaper through him, it seems like a hassle to have to get a prescription in place with a mail order company.

If your vet really believes that your kitty can eventually come off the Rx food, and since WalMart is convenient for you, it is my understanding that WalMart may carry Sheba brand food which, while not perfect, their pate style is not bad.  It's one of the ones I now feed my girls, but I haven't been to WalMart in years so I'm not absolutely certain they carry it.

Good luck with your kitty!
