This is Dublin. I adopted him from a rescue. He is mostly black with some pepper "stripes" all over and weird random patches of pepper and gray on his chin/mouth and above his eyes. (makes him look like he has eyebrows). His whiskers are also a mix of white and black. He has a brown/orange mark on his nose, which made me wonder if that's an extra X chromosome showing like in a Calico. He is a male, so that would be odd. That is the only orange marking he has. Would he be considered a Tortoiseshell Tabby?

WOW! I have no idea how to answer your question, but l had to drop in and say how beautiful and how unusual he is! He looks like he wanted to be a tabby but ended up almost black.

He's just an amazing colour.

Wow ! This is difficult one ! Gorgeous boy by the way !

You are right about him being a male torbie ( tortoiseshell tabby ) due to an extra chromosome. Quite rare indeed ;)

You ay well have an XXY cat there.  They do exist.  In my experience, they are some of the sweetest cats around -- the don't have the "tortietude" like the females do.

What a beautiful and unusual cat you have.  I look forward to hearing and seeing more of this little one and he grows up.

Thank you for posting more pictures of Dublin, he is quite spectacular!  Almost like a shadow cat - the way his stripes come and go like there's sun shining through a venetian blind casting shadows on his fur while he soaks up the heat.  Very pretty, and his profile is lovely too.  If he is a good natured people cat and not shy as you describe, you could think about entering him in the pet classes in shows.  I've only been to 4 shows but it's enough to see non-pedigree pets winning best in show, in fact they won it in 2 of them so 50% is a good marker!
