Hi, i`m new to the cat site.My name is Alex & i live in Melbourne, Australia.I am still struggling at times with the loss of my female cat who was 11 years old & passed away in August last year. We got her when she was very young, about 4 weeks old , just a handful she was & over that period from december 2001 until about august 2013 she was a very sweet cat though she was very timid around strangers, probably because we got her so young.Over the years she would have caught countless mice & rats & she loved eating them which amused my parents, sister & i.In mid 2012 , our winter down here she broke her leg somehow. As she was an outdoor cat more than indoor we wern`t sure what happened.Summarizing what happened , we paid $1500 for the operation, medicines & care to get her better which she gradually did but in august last year she started to lose weight, then started to have an elevated heart rate & despite taking her to the vet multiple times they just told us to make her eat more by focusing on food she really liked for eg sardines & the like. For a few days she was eating better but one day my mother saw her drooling & later we saw her not walking but dragging herself by her back legs.We wern`t sure what was wrong & as it was sunday i was going to take her to the vet the next day after work but at night i brought her in but she seemed quiet & a short time later she started convulsing. We took here to an emergency animal hospital but she passed away about an hour later.I was devastated.I took her home in a cloth bag the vets provided & looked at her for a while staring death in the face.i was very upset & cried that night but picked myself up the next day & after work went to my mums place where i grew up & after kissing her a few times i buried her behind our old brick bbq.Since then i`ve thought about kitty a lot & dreamt about her being with my dad who passed in 2009 & loved her a lot & that thought comforts me a lot.Sorry if this post rambled a bit long but i wanted to share this experience with fellow cat lovers out there,Alex.

Welcome to TCS, Alex. I'm very sorry about your loss. It's really, really difficult to lose a cherished pet, especially one that shared your life for quite a while, but wasn't really old in cat years.

We lost our Jamie almost a year ago, but I don't think a day has gone by when I haven't thought about him.

Oh, Alex, I am so sorry for your loss of your baby girl. It's difficult and we all know the pain and have felt exactly what you're feeling right now. My heart goes out to you and I wish you peace.

Alex,

I am very sorry for your loss.  I do understand, I lost my beautiful b;ack & white tailed Manx, Pudge, Novemebr 14, 2005 and I still miss him.  I had him from his birth and he was with me for 14 years,  It is so hard since our beloved pets cannot speak.  Know that the love and attention you gave made her life better and she basked in your attention.

I currently have three beautiful inside tabbies, very large and spoiled - Copper, Cleo & BJ- and recently found a visually impaired kitten, Vi, and her 2 brothers, Pepper & Rebel, to love and care for.  They will never replace our loved one, Pudge lives on in my memories, but they make life so full with their antics and love.

Again, my sympathy for your loss.

Alex, I am so sorry for your loss. It's hard to watch them suffer and hard to let them go. I too watched my baby boy Cocoa convulse. It's a horrible thing to watch someone you love have seizures. He passed away last month but it hurts every day. Sometimes I laugh at the funny memories. I can't tell you the pain won't go away but I'm sure it will. I can't tell you even the sweet memories won't be painful but I'm hoping in time they won't. I will tell you I will walk with you through your grief and our babies are in Heaven happy and healthy. What was your kitty's name? Knowing Cocoa he's greeted her with his Catzilla pounce. It was when he stood straight up on his hind legs and arched out his front ones.

Thanks to everyone so far for your kind responses. My kittys name was kitty angels4mom.I know it`s an obvious one but our first 2 cats growing up were both called linda - they were both also female cats so i thought something more traditional.I didn`t add originally that at the all night emergency medical clinic where kitty passed away the vets diagnosed her as having had a stroke/strokes hence the drooling & convulsions & that she most likely had heart disease.I know she had 11 nearly 12 good years but sometimes i feel jealous when i hear other cat owners who`s kittys live for 15 - 20 years or more. Then again i should be happy we had her as long as we did.

Even if you keep your cat indoors there is no guarantee they will live to be 20 years old. I have had 2 to live to 20 and then one only lived to 9 years and like your kitty died of a heart attack. Just like people it's also genetic. Again you have my deepest condolences.

Bless you for caring so much, that's why it hurts so much to lose them. You did all you could, take comfort in that you had taken her to the ER and I'm sure she knew you were trying to help. She sounds like a wonderful friend and would want you to keep her in your heart where she will live forever in your memories. I don't doubt at all that your dreams are her trying to comfort you with the knowledge that she is safe and warm with your dad, they will both be waiting for you. RIP beautiful little girl!
