I brought my cat to get spayed this morning. When I brought her home she kept picking at the stitches. She calmed down a teensy bit and sat on my lap but after a while she started making a low 'oooooooooowwwww' sound and jumped off. She started picking the stitches and I was forced to put the cone on because as she was picking the stitches she was meowing really loudly and painfully. She was lying on my bed that has a big puffy duck feather duvet so its really soft and cosy. She was like that for a bit but now shes jumped off but she's walking strangly like she's really weak and just lays down.
does anyone have any idea when she'll be back to her normal lovable self?

Very sweet cos our dog has been pining for her and when we brought her home the dog started nuzzling her. Im worried that the cat will be different somehow you know personality wise does that happen? Please help we're all sick with worry! :cat:

Aww, bless! I wouldn't worry about your cat's personality just yet - she's still very very sore and probably groggy with anesthetic. I don't know how long it will be before she starts to feel better as they all handle it differently, but I should imagine she'll start to feel more like herself in a few days but the anesthetic should wear off within a day.   She may be walking strangely because of pain and the sensation of the stitches or even feeling out of it because of the anesthetic so unless it goes on for a long time, I'd not worry about it - she probably will stop when it starts to heal. If she seems in a silly amount of pain and loses interest in things like eating & drinking, please call your vet about bringing her back in for a check and some pain killers?

Keep her as warm and safe as poss, lots of cuddles! I think it's small amounts of food isnt it? Remembering what my vet said after anesthetic, giving a little at a time to make sure he wasn't sick.

You can put neosporin on the stitches. It will help with the itchies and pain at the site. Good thing you have the cone since it is obvious she's going at the stitches. The itchies will get worse too. She will be back to normal within a day or two. She'll probably be more loveable and needy especially with the cone on. Anesthesia really messes with their whole system and they act a bit off too. If she doesn't eat by tomorrow morning then I would just give your vet an update call. Expect not pooping for 2 to 3 days due to the fasting she did prior to surgery. She'll be fine...don't freak.

I have a 6 month kitten who was fixed at 4 months when I adopted her from a local shelter. I immediately took her to my vet the same day I picked her up. She only had 1 stitch in her my vet said. She was kept quarantined for 5 days but was really jumping up and down on the bed within 2 days. Kittens are screwy. Now I adopted a 17 year old 3 years ago, yes Momma is still around, I had her fixed as her former owner gave her to me that way. It took Momma full 7 days to recover but is back to being her own sweet self once she felt better. I wouldn't worry but don't put neosporin on the incision leave it alone unless it bleeds or starts oozing then call the vet. No playing doctor with the cat.

If it itches, which it probably will and the kitty won't leave them alone I would suggest pure vitamin e oil - perfectly safe for a cat to lick and it can help with itching a lot. I wouldn't know about the antibiotic cream suggested but I wouldn't like the thought myself.

My vet advised neosporin for spay, FO surgery, and even my kitty's entropion stitches. It did heal faster like he said and eased the itchiness. I personally liked the thought of a germ fighting barrier to ward off infection while healing. So I'm not "playing doctor".....my vet was playing doctor.

Thank you all for the advice, I was really starting to freak!
Last night she kept falling over but didn't try to get back up again. We fashioned her a new bed out of an old pillow and a couple of blankets because her old bed was a bit cramped and she kept hurting while she was lying there but she never got comfy. She fell asleep almost immediately.
This morning she was woke us up in her usual way:demanding to be fed, lol.
She gobbled up her food in a flash so she seems alright. The cone has really helped, when it wasn't on she was pulling at the stitches constantly and also hurting herself in the process.
Right now she's cuddled on my lap purring like a machine ;-)
Hopefully she's on the mend! :D
