Could teething be the reason for the change in my kitten's behavior?  Sam is about 15 weeks old and we've had him for a month.  His appetite seemed to decrease last week over a few days and by Sunday he was not interested in food.  The only thing that i could attribute to it was starting him on L-Lysine (pure powder form for his sneezing).  I stopped giving it to him, and after 24 hrs he seemed back to normal, eating and playing.  All good Monday and Tuesday.  Wednesday slept all day but would get up to eat and use litter box as usual.  Only played a bit very late at night.  Yesterday slept again all day.  Didn't ask for food mid day as he usually does.  Woke him up and brought him to the bowl, and then he ate.  Ate well in the evening, used litter box normally.  He still has a bit of congestion.  I can hear him snoring a bit when sleeping, and he sneezes at times, but not much.  No discharge.  Spoke to the vet yesterday.  She said that maybe he is just growing up and changing his sleeping/playing behavior.  We are due to come in for shots in 2 weeks.  Unless something else changes, she said no need to bring him in.  Just now he tore up a piece of paper towel and i saw 2 tiny drops of blood on it.  Looked in his mouth and there is a tiny red dot on his upper gum in between teeth.  Maybe he lost a tooth?  Or a new one is growing in?  Is his change due to teething?  Are kittens like babies?  I remember when my daughter was teething...  She was not happy!  Any other suggestions?  Is this just him growing up and being playful anymore?  It's a long time since i had a kitten!  Please help!  I can't stop worrying about him!

I've never noticed a behavior/eating change in teething kittens, they all just wanted to chew on things more. Is the 'dot' where a tooth was? Is it missing? I would be more inclined to think he isn't feeling well. L-Lysine is wonderful to keep the immune system built up so I would definitely start that again. If he doesn't eat the powder in food, I get the treats on Amazon and my cats love them.Since he sounds congested and isn't moving around as much he most likely has a upper respiratory infection, or URI. He may need an antibiotic or an antibiotic shot to get better. Watch him carefully, if he refuses to eat, tempt him with meat baby food or special treats. If he still refuses, call your vet, it may be serious. Keep plenty of fluids down him, if he won't drink water, tempt him with tuna juice, it counts.Maybe too he has an infected tooth, that would cause all your symptoms too, see if you can judge whether his mouth hurts or not, does he have trouble when he does eat? Are his gums pink and healthy? Good luck and don't hesitate to call a vet, calling is free!

I wouldn't say that teething will make your kitten sleep more, though he may be a bit sore. I would've thought a kitten who's starting to teeth would be chewing on all sorts of things, is he doing this?  You can help by supplying harder toys and something like a blanket to chew on which seems to help - will hopefully help Sam not chew other things you don't want chewed!

I don't know what the dot is, or where exactly it is, but I guess it could be the very tip of a tooth starting to poke though as you say. Incisors are first, then canines at about 6 months old if that helps try and figure out the position of the dot?

I agree with Di and Bob, it does sound more like a cold, poor little thing or perhaps he has an allergy to his food - have you tried switching?  And I don't think he's too old to slow down his playing - the exact opposite tbh. I would expect a kitten to play a fair bit and sleep a fair bit, not sleep all the time. It does sound like he's poorly. If you are concerned and he's still the same in a day or two, I would take him back to the vet anyway. Good luck to Sam.

Thanks for you replies!  He was chewing on everything a week ago and for a few weeks before that.  i had to kitty proof the house because he chewed off a fairly thick string off a toy and swallowed it.  showed up in his poop!  he has toys to play but seems to be bored with them.  bought him a new one yesterday.  he played just a bit and was done with.  today i remember about a small ball he loved and played with it for 20 mins!  i was happy to see play.  then back to sleep.  he ate fine.

The dot is seems to be where incisor would come in.  upper left 3 tooth from the middle between the tiny teeth and the big canine.  it dried up right away.  his gums are nice pale pink.

I will on watching him and see how he is.  i told the vet about the sneezing and wheezing when he is breathing when a sleep.  she said he must still be getting over the cold and may have a mild case of bronchitis.  she said no need to bring him in unless something else changes.  i think i will wait and see and he is not better will take him to get checked out.  he just stresses so much when going to the vet.  every time i took him he seemed worse than before.  we had so many issues :(  hope he gets better.

I should explain that his appetite decreased and he wouldn't eat his wet food that didn't have L Lysine in it, so it wasn't that he didn't like the taste and wouldn't eat it.  the first few days when i was giving him l lysine mixed with his food, he didn't seem to notice the difference...
