Hi, my name is Mona and my husband and I live in the suburbs of Chicago. I grew up in a house full of cats, and brought mine (Bud, an inky) with me when I moved out in 1995.  Bud passed away in 2001, and we've been without a cat since. In the interim, we had two amazing boston terriers, both of whom passed away in 2013. The house now suddenly, & horribly empty for the first time in my life, and not "ready" for another dog, I returned to my first love... CATS! Best decision, ever! We will likely have another dog again someday, but for now we are thoroughly enjoying, and quite content with the two teenage kittens we adopted 3 weeks ago.

Introducing Dory. She's 6 months old, and a total goofball. Here she is on my yarn bins (I knit and crochet):

And now for George. He's 7 months old and while also silly at times, he is our little thinker. Here he is in the bathroom sink (of course!):

Both were found (on separate occasions) by themselves at just several weeks old. We adopted them 3 weeks ago from a cage-free rescue, where they have grown up together and with a few dozen other cats & kittens. As a result, they are incredibly social. Dory is fearless. George takes time to figure things out (new sounds, especially), but is quite the friendly guy, too. They are not big lap sitters or bed hogs, yet. But we are working towards that because they do love being held and doted upon. I imagine the day will come in the not too distant future, where we ask ourselves, bleary-eyed at 4:00am, why in the world we longed for them to snuggle!

I found this website when hubby & I made the decision to get cats and wanted to refresh my memory on all sorts of things. We are also dealing with what is likely Eosinophilic Granuloma Complex with George...which we were made aware of before adopting him. So depending on how easy/difficult to manage that proves to be, I may very well be needing extra help & advice as time goes by. I'm really glad to have found everyone. See you on the forums!!

Aww, what a couple of nice tuxxies! Beautiful markings. Your Dory looks like my Thomas only a little more gentile - Both have that Zorro mask thing going on
Ooops, looks like they both have that Zorro mask going on. Nice.

Sorry to hear about the Granuloma. Another term for this is rodent ulcer which is an auto-immune disorder. My Max gets these from time to time, and they can be managed. I discovered that L-Lysine can be very effective in helping to prevent flares. There are likely a few threads here on rodent ulcers and several on L-Lysine. Worth checking out.

Get ready for lots of thrills and chills with your Tuxxies. They are ultra curious and busy cats. Welcome to TCS!

Thank you all for the warm welcome!

George's EGC doesn't present with a rodent ulcer (at least, not yet). There are 3 known ways it can present, and his is the linear tracks of plaques/lumps down his rear legs, and at his neck. He had two Depo injections spaced 2 weeks apart while still in rescue, which did help dramatically. Currently he just has a few spots at the neck. We are continuing his flea control, and limiting the proteins in his diet (and zero grains). Our hope is to turn to the steroids as little as possible. Time will tell if we need to make further changes for him, as I know it's often extremely difficult to narrow down the culprit(s).  It's not too common for EGC to surface in such a young cat (~6 months, when first noticed), but the general thought in some of the reading I've done is that the younger ones have slightly higher odds for easier, or even spontaneous, remission. So fingers & paws crossed, just taking things as they come!

And thank you for the tip on the lysine! We started both of them on it several days after we adopted them, as Dory came down with conjunctivitis in one eye, and George a snotty URI. Additional meds from the vet have nipped that in the bud for both of them, thankfully.  As shelter/rescue cats, I know we need to keep an eye on them going forward for flare-ups as an indicator of feline herpes.  It's good to know that the lysine may also help the EGC for George, too! I did not know that!

Welcome, Mona, Dory, and George!
I'm glad you decided to return to your first love.
Dory and George are such cutie pies and at 6 and 7 months, I'm sure they will keep you well entertained and on your toes.
