Our neighbor's tree has dropped large limbs onto our shed roof, and all over our backyard, due to the ice storm yesterday.

I thought it best to call my homeowner's insurance company before doing anything.  They said that we have to talk to him first, as it's his tree. Is this right?  DH thinks they're just trying to get us to leave them alone (they must have billions of claims right now).

Is any of your property damaged. I think your homeowner's should cover it if the neighbor's don't offer to do so.

Hmmm.  Our homeowner's insurance has taken care of damage from downed trees in our yard before, even when it wasn't clear exactly whose tree it was.

One of our trees came down and damaged our neighbor's shed, and our homeowner's insurance covered it. That might be why you're supposed to talk to him first.

I had a tree in my yard go down and spear the neighbor's car like an olive. Literally. My homeowner's insurance covered it since it was my tree.

Our neighbour's insurance paid to replace our shed, playstructure, and fence when they were flattened by his tree.
