Hi, I just had a cat that gave birth yesterday.  I felt movement up until a few hours before birth.  The last litter she had there were 5 kittens, so I thought that would be what we would have in this litter.  Surprise, we got 7.  A few hours before birth she was spending more time in the cat bed I bought her and was more affectionate and not hissing at all my other cats.  Before Tuesday the mother cat had showed no interest in the cat bed and didnt even want to be in the room I had set up for her.  As my vet said, they give birth when they want and they are usually quiet about it.

We have 3 black, 1 black tiger, 2 black with swirl patterns, and 1 white with a black spot on the back of the head.  Yesterday when I first checked her she had two and then had two more within a relatively short period of time. I went back to bed and when I checked her three hours later I saw 5. I moved everyone to change the bedding and found one more that was hiding.  An hour later I checked again and since I thought she was done having babies I was quite shocked to find the 7th.  I figure the delivery was about 6 hours in length and everything went smoothly.
