We brought tom & jerry home from the shelter where I volunteer.two 4 moth old short haired tiger, mom a stray, raised in a garage with slight socialization....mom. & siblings found homes right away. Tom & Jerry (don't know if they got no playtime or what, but much more terrified than rest of littler. So terrified I couldn't stand yin anymore & brought them home a week ago Saturday to "sweet talk that last bit of fear out of them". Hmmmmmmm....... Sounded good!!!!! First 2 days bad. No way around it. Day 3 better....and progress continued steadily ---thanks partially to kitty crack , the today show and long hours working and playing in confined quarters

Until tonight.

They developed raging diarrheal, so went to pick up meds from the shelter ....and got what kittens consider evil incarnate :Albon. Lots of it. Tommy's first dose (&turned out HALF only dose tonight after all that!!!!!!) resulted in a hi-pitched peel/scream unlike I've heard-----and ran in circles drooling profusely. His brother took the full dose, but then wouldn't let us near.the version of Albon. We even tried to gently pick up & swaddled & the minute he even smelled it -he bit/scratched my DH so hard he may need stitches-this is just smelling the med?!?! The gave us means 9 more days of this---but that's a joke! We'll never reestablish a connection at this rate!!!!

Is there a different type of Albon? Or alternative?

Any great suggestions? On meds? Or making it easier? I've medicated hundreds of cats but he's beyond terrified, & that specific medication seemed to make it worse!!!

Help!!!!!!

Over the summer I had to medicate a stray/feral I brought into the house for 21 days.  He tested positive for Bordetella aka Cat Scratch Fever.  I started with the liquid unflavored.  He spit and drooled and ran and hid.  There was no way to get it down him again.  We have a compounding pharmacy here and they can flavor meds with chicken/tuna or salmon.  I tried chicken and salmon.  I got it in him for 2 days then the same things; spitting and drooling.  Last ditch effort before hiring a vet tech to come to the house each day was to try the tablet form and put it in a pill pocket.  It worked like a charm.  He loved his "treat" each morning.  Not sure if the diarrhea meds come in tablet form or not or you can look to see if you have a compounding pharmacy that will flavor it.

Hope the kitties recover soon.

(Reread my post: sorry it was half incoherent-I was exhausted, upset & fibro kicking in).

The shelter's looking at a 1 time dosage they have (for some reason they can't figure out how to mix it up?!?!?). So I'm calling this evening once our Zlevel 3 snow emergency is gone....hopefully they'll have figured it out & I can pick that up. Think I could do 1 more dose - beyond that all bets are off!!!! If not-I'll ask about a pill version (although of course this is one of the least food oriented kittens we've ever had).....and also going to call the only compounding pharmacy I know of in town to see if they could do a flavor. Hopefully we'll win this war as poor baby is passing water! And the last thing either needs is an excuse to be scared -I thought a few days at our house would help slot & we're nowhere NESSr being ready to go back to the shelter. :(

Hope that you have had some luck within the last two days since your last post. :cross: Ooooooo - Albon..... I have always had it dispensed in the pill form and use a pill plunger. Even if you put it in a treat and they chew there is risk of the taste. Metronidazole is another good one but bitter as well. :vibes::vibes::vibes::vibes::vibes::vibes::vibes:

I just got a call that I can go in tomorrow and pick up the "one time dose" version - thank goodness!

I did finally manage to figure out this morning that the poor one of the two with the really watery diarrhea (Tom - he's the one on the left in the picture) would consume it - tuna!  But his brother Jerry seems - oddly - afraid of tuna??? He actually backs up from it - even when I tried it without the Albon in it as a test. So he hasn't gotten much Albon down at all. Kittens - they never cease to surprise - but guess that's what makes them fun!!!

I'd never had the drool reaction (which I always associated with either a scary taste or an allergic reaction) to Albon - which is what I think freaked me out even more than normal. I've had it to lots of pills - but never to a liquid - particularly Albon.

So everyone please think happy thoughts that this helps poor Tom. Despite what has to be a miserable experience in the litterbox, he's still quite the trooper and hasn't missed yet (knock on wood). I'd also been so worried that this would set them back, since - even though they're technically not feral - they were beyond terrified in the shelter. They've definitely made progress just in the past day or so - they'll now sleep on my lap (what would I do without the magic of Kitty Crack!). And they've stopped running and cowering when we enter the room. Now if we can get them so that they can be picked up without panicking...maybe they can go back to the shelter before they're too big to be "kitten cute". Any bets on how hard attached I am after only a week and a half - and how hard it's going to be to see them go back to the shelter? (Maybe I can find homes for these guys before they go back too - but I have a feeling my lucky streak with that is coming to an end as I'm out of kitty-needing friends!)

They are adorable though - and I'm not even an "orange cat person" (hope that doesn't make me sound evil :) These two boys are making me orange cat converts  - my new favorite thing about them is that Tom loves television (we leave it on 24/7 to get them used to voices). He really loved the Puppy Bowl and Kitten Bowl - wish I'd videotaped his head going back and forth like a tennis match!

OH are THEY BEAUTIFUL boys. You are paving a path of trust and love with these two boys and I do hope that you are lucky in finding the perfect home for them before they have to go back to the shelter. TOGETHER, of course. :lol3: Too cute, them on your lap in the photo. :rub: :vibes::vibes::vibes::vibes::vibes::vibes: for Tom and Jerry.
