I've been feeding my 4mo kitten Fancy Feast Kitten whitefish wet food for the past month (since we adopted him).  Rescue place said that's what he prefers and would not eat other flavors.  Since we brought him home, he had diarrhea, and while to get that under control i didn't want to change his diet and keep everything constant.  finally his diarrhea is under control, and i'm trying to improve his diet.  in addition, to wet food i keep purina kitten dry food out for him.  he grazes through the day but doesn't eat that much of dry food, which is fine with me.  it just downed on me how bad it must be to have fed him fish non stop.  just bought him FF kitten turkey and he loves it!  ate yesterday and his poop is still all good!  i decided to look at other flavor option but it seems these 2 are the only choices (fish and turkey) for kittens.  Do i continue feeding him kitten specific food or can he have regular food for cats?  should i try to do better than FF?  reading thru some of the threads i see that people avoid fish flavors.  why?  what don't i know?

Unfortunately, there aren't really that many canned kitten food options out there.  You can feed any "all stages" canned food though.

Some people feed their cats fish their entire lives and have no issues.  Others say that fishy foods can cause Urinary Tract problems.  I feed my cats quite a bit of canned fish food, because they are quite picky and that's why they like, and will eat, and so far they've not had any problems.  But if your little one likes the Turkey and Giblets, that's great.  I think feeding a variety is the ticket!  And once he is about 8 months old, then you don't even need to stick with the kitten or all stages food.  Then plain old Adult food should be AOK to use.

I chose Wellness Kitten food for our kitten.  They make a CORE one and the other one.  She didn't seem to like the trial can of CORE as much but the Wellness Kitten Health only comes in 3 oz. cans. We only feed a little dry food at night but chose Wellness Kitten Health for that and she has liked it.

I didn't want her to get "stuck" on just one thing so I've been working on finding other foods, "all stages."  Fancy Feast Classics are some of her favorites and we are working on finding some others that don't break the bank.  Evo makes a cat and kitten food too but we couldn't find it.  It's true that it's probably not necessary, but the kitten foods are higher in calories and the kittens are growing.  Some foods are rather low calorie and may not fill a growing kitten.

She likes the FF fish too but I do try not to feed it too often.  She is picky but at least she doesn't just eat gravy or only eat one kind like some cats. Yes, Dandy did get loose stools from FF grilled which is a gravy one (not a classic) so you might want to be cautious.  I don't know what caused the diarrhea but I guess this particular FF line can do it (I was warned here and she didn't react as well as to the Classics.) The other 4 cans are going to the shelter food drive.

I think there are some other kitten foods but I don't think they cost any less.  FF isn't so cheap when you get a pile of those little cans in a day either :)
