Yesterday morning, I took my sweet boy, Pyro, to the vet to have him look at a small lump at the base of Pyro's right ear. Because of the location and his age (8 yes), Dr. was concerned and did surgery right away to remove it. We will get the pathology report mid-week.
Although I expected my cat would be a little loopy following surgery (and they said he would be), his behavior concerned me. He would fall over at the slightest shake of his head, his eyes were going back and forth, he couldn't focus. He seemed very dizzy - the way I felt when I had an inner ear infection.
I was up with him most of the night last night. He's restless and can't settle down to sleep. His symptoms were worse this morning, so I took him back to the clinic right away. Apparently there are a couple of possibilities. 1. Reaction to medication - so he is OFF of all meds, including pain killers & anti-inflammatories. He just had surgery yesterday, so he's probably in lots of pain. OR
2. Pyro's eardrum was inadvertently ruptured when they cleaned his ears. Dr thought it was a good opportunity to do that since he would already be sedated.
I am a mess!! He was a happy, playful, sweet snuggle bug two nights ago. Now Py is frightened, disoriented, confused, in pain, and obviously very uncomfortable. I just don't know what to do. I feel utterly HELPLESS!!!!
:((

how do they test for a ruptured eardrum? is he any calmer now? I'm bumping this up hoping someone else can help you, because I don't know why a vet would let you take him back home in that condition

The vet said he isn't positive that's what happened, because he can't actually see the eardrum, though he tried. All of Pyros symptoms are consistent with a broken eardrum. I'm afraid he is unwilling to say for sure bc it would be their fault. I just want him to feel better. I can't get him to drink, but he will eat a bit of wet food. He vomited again this morning, though. I was up most of the night trying to help him, but there is really nothing I can do.
He is somewhat calmer when I am right there with him, but his dizziness seems to be worse. He wobbles constantly. I know he is miserable. :(
My heart breaks every time I look at him! Thank you-any input is helpful to me!!
