I've read through a lot of the posts but am looking for something more specific that I couldn't find on here yet. My cat has started having very hard stool, and she eats less. She only eats dry food and will not touch wet food, (that is another situation I'm working on). What I am looking for is a dry food that is very healthy, and that aids healthy digestion. I prefer the grain free food, but is there something that I can give her that helps her stools to be softer and her digestion a little better. I feel like what she is eating right now is not working so well with her system anymore. It's a grain free from a healthy pet food store (can't think of the food name right now). I am looking for a food that might soften her stool, maybe something with more fiber, or a hairball formula type of food?

Any input would be much appreciated!!

Thank you

I feed Raw so can't help you with dry food recommendations.

But, if you eat meat, I would put a piece of raw meat in his food bowl, act like you don't care if he eats it or not :)

In so far as food that would make his stool softer, have you tried plain pumpkin (i.e., not pumpkin pie filling)?

Also, the more water he'll drink the better.  How is his water intake?   You might try a pet fountain, filtered water.

If you make soup, you might try boiling some chicken in PLAIN water, saving the stock, maybe boiling it down further, and giving your cat that.

Yeah, a lot of trouble (and I am so NOT  a cook!), but... :)

For digestion, you could try probiotics, although I'm don't think that will help soften hard stools.

Have you tried any of the transition tips here:

Like Ritz said, the simplest cause of constipation is lack of moisture from an all dry diet. There are tips to increase water intake here:

http://www.thecatsite.com/a/tips-to-increase-your-cat-s-water-intake

Increased water intake may resolve the constipation. If not, there may be impaired motility or digestive issues. A small amount of fiber may help if that is the case. A bit of canned pumpkin (not pie filling) or something like Miralax may be needed. A really good explanation of feline constipation is here: http://www.felineconstipation.org/

To be honest, the constipation combined with eating less would have me worried. I would recommend a vet check-up to ensure there is not something more serious behind it.

I'm guessing she is eating less because she is constipated, or at least irregular.  And if her stool is harder than normal, she definitely needs some sort of a change. Canned would be best, more water optimal too.   I would try the transition tip Vball included in her post to get her to eat some wet food, and add a probiotic to her diet as well. I give mine the same probiotic that I take...in otherwords, a human one
.  I just open up the capsule and stir it into their wet food.

As far as a good kibble that helps to soften their stool, I'm not sure there is such a thing.  For that, you need liquid.   Now you can use Miralax to help soften her stool.  Many people use it for their constipated cats, but I don't think that's what you are looking for.  If it is, just search "miralax" at the top of the page and you'll find dozens of threads on it
